My favourite message to share every year!

Not every child wants to talk about their summer, not every child had a positive morning at home and not every child feels ready to learn.

Good luck to everybody starting back at school this week 💙

“Our lives aren’t just measured in years, they’re measured in the lives of the people we touch around us.” 💙

I love teaching The Hunger Games. What makes teaching The Hunger Games so much fun? For starters, and this is probably the most important factor, the kids love it. I don’t have to worry about getting them to read, and that is often half the battle. The Hunger Games is also an ideal teaching text because it introduces important topics and themes in an entertaining way. During our study of The Hunger Games, we explore a diverse range of topics that expand our understanding of the world, our society, and human nature.

When students truly enjoy and want to read a text, you don’t have the constant struggle of getting them to read. You don’t have to add incentives or threaten consequences; the kids simply read because they want to. Too often we force students to read texts they have no interest in. Sometimes the struggle is worthwhile because reading these texts expands our students’ cultural literacy, and sometimes students discover that they actually like, or at least appreciate a text after they are forced to read it. But it really is a joy when students are enthusiastic about reading, and that is what I have experienced with The Hunger Games. In fact, one of the challenges I now face when teaching The Hunger Games is that many students have already read it.

Anxiety can be a masterful imposter. In children, it can sway away from the more typical avoidant, clingy behaviour and show itself as tantrums, meltdowns and aggression. As if anxiety wasn’t hard enough to deal with!

When children are under the influence of an anxious brain, their behaviour has nothing to do with wanting to push against the limits. They are often great kids who don’t want to do the wrong thing, but they are being driven by a brain in high alert.

If we could see what was happening in their heads when anxiety takes hold like this, their behaviour would make sense. Of course, that doesn’t mean that they should be getting a free pass on their behaviour. Their angry behaviour makes sense, and it’s important to let them know this, but there will always be better choices they are capable of making.

Once kids have a more solid understanding of why they do what they do, they will be well on their way to finding a better response.

One of the best clues that you are about to fall into fear based thoughts is when you start with “what-ifs.” But you know what's great about what-ifs? They not only signal it’s time to take some deep breaths, they also can be a signal to shift direction.

If you’re already good at asking what-ifs, then there’s a pretty good chance you’ve got a powerful imagination to come up with all those anxious need to protect myself “what-ifs.” So why not use that creative strength and turn those what-if-protective- thoughts into what-if-better-case-more-likely-possibility-thoughts. In other words, what-if the what-ifs.
