Just a little thought on skateboarding as it relates to what we do here at English for Skateboarders. In a sense, it reflects well my own relationship with skating in that the activity of skating was the finite pleasurable moment. But the true, lifelong benefits were those that derived from the activity of skating. āThanks to skateboarding this and that happenedā. The 360 flip wasn't the big picture, but rather the ripples it created. I speak for many when I say that skating opened doors to meeting new people, experiencing new discoveries, simply just getting out of the house, building crap jump ramps (you had to be there), discovering new music, learning about graphic design and other art forms, photography, being exposed to people who valued individuality, and countless other benefits. In our English courses, we like to think that there is also an immediate positive and a larger one that is perhaps more delayed. The immediate benefit is to get better at English. The larger picture is that skating and similar positive choices open new doors.
