Todays afternoon activity:
"Let's make Spag Bol"
Oh I love this. It’s such a rich little activity because on paper it’s “making dinner,” but underneath it there’s language development, maths, sensory exploration, communication, understanding the world, fine motor skills… tiny humans basically doing a full interdisciplinary symposium while covered in grated carrot. Peak EYFS honestly.

The children peeled onions and garlic, grated carrots, explored the different colours and textures of the vegetables, and even tasted some raw carrot as we talked about flavours and healthy foods. We counted how many times we moved the carrot over the grater, building early maths skills through play and real-life experiences.
The activity sparked lots of curiosity and conversation, with the children asking wonderful questions such as “Why is it called an apron?” We used Alexa together to research the answer, helping the children understand that we can use technology to find information and learn new things.
There’s something very charming to me about children stopping mid-onion-peeling to launch an etymology investigation about aprons. Tiny philosophers in aprons themselves.
