NASA Selects Bold Proposal to "Swarm" Proxima Centauri with Tiny Probes Humans have dreamed about traveling to other star systems and setting foot on alien worlds for generations. To put it mildly, interstellar exploration is a very daunting task. As we explored in a previous post, it would take between 1000 and 81,000 years for a spacecraft to reach Alpha Centauri (of....

Image from Derek Robson (EAARO's director of astrochemistry) shows spectrum of meteor of 23:45:24 GMT, 13 April 2022

The bright thing at upper is the moon.
The spectrum of the meteor is in lower right quadrant.

EAARO responsibly deployed an official team in Tewekesbury last year (2021) and using supporting trajectory data supplied by The American Meteor Society found the which is believed to be from the same meteor as those fragments found in The organisation allows organisations and individuals who would normally not get the opportunity, scientific access to the Carbonaceous Chondrite material. Its believed that this is the earliest known material to man whuch may have been the stuff that clumped together to form our planet!

How did life spawn on Earth? This meteorite might know the answer

How did life spawn on Earth? This meteorite might know the answer Space rocks are so common, you can even find them on eBay, but some meteorites that fall to Earth are invaluable. An eerie greenish-yellow fireball streaked across the sky one night back in February.

SPA News for Victoria Duncalf.

Pop Astro Live, Thursday 22 July, 8 pm
Hide away from the heat of evening, all nice and dark with the curtains and windows shut tight, to enjoy Pop Astro Live.

Astronomer Botherer Vicky Duncalf is joined by all-girl crew Sonia Turkington and Eleni Tsiakaliari, to bring you the latest in astronomy news and hot gossip. Who is Orion dating? Which planet has been spotted sporting a new ring? And we try the Saturn diet, for those of us with a pesky oblate figure.

Two guests this week: Mike Frost on astronomical history, and Derek Robson, Director of Astrochemistry at the East Anglian Astrophysical Research Organisation. Derek found the Woodmancote Meteorite with some excellent detective work.

This week's Sing the Space News features a 'funky' tribute to a certain new astronaut.

Plus, Cosmo the Telescope Sloth has been off on his travels – can you guess where? Judging from his sunburn, he's spent a few weeks in the Sun's corona. We advised him not to go, but will he listen?

Loads of amazing astro-friends in the chat room, best place to expand your social group. Come play!

You can watch the show by going to The Society for Popular Astronomy or youtube.com/popastro or twitter.com/popastro just before 8 pm. You can also view on a smart TV by going to the YouTube option and searching on popastro, and you can find previous recordings on YouTube as well.

Newsletter produced by Robin Scagell. If you wish to comment or unsubscribe from receiving news from the SPA, please email [email protected].

Ancient meteorite could reveal the origins of life on Earth A 4.6-billion-year-old meteorite found lying in the imprint of a horseshoe is likely a remnant of cosmic debris left over from the birth of the solar system and could answer questions about how life began on Earth.
