Children enjoyed learning about some animals that live in colder climates and exploring a ice tuff tray with some of these animals like polar bears, penguins, seals/walruses and different whales. Lots of new language/words used and talked bout how cold and slippery the ice was

We made some penguin sun catchers with children chosing favourite colours and then putting them on the nursery door to see how they look from the daylight shining through.

Made polar bears faces and learning about what makes them different to other bears.

And we talked about what we would do if we had snow and the favourite thing was make snowmen, so children either drew or used cut out circles to make snowmen. Using fine motor skills.

We have taken advantage of the cold spell to freeze a tuff tray with water overnight so that the children could experiment with ice painting.

We discussed how when it gets very cold outside that water can freeze and also what happens to the ice as it starts to get warmer

This gave the children the opportunity to explore colour mixing, patterns and feel the texture of the slippery, cold, wet ice. This helps the children in using fine and gross motor skills and control.

Children used lots of words like "melty", "slippery", "frozen", "cold" "hard", as they used the paint onto the ice they said, "looks like glass", its so slippery, I cant hold it," "making my hands cold", its making different colours when I mix it together", Im making lighter blue", "green and red makes brown", "its melting now, its warmer", "its breaking up".

Children have enjoyed this activity and asked if they can do this again.

Thank you to everyone that came to our Christmas Craft activities stay and play, it was lovely to have parents come into nursery to make some Christmas crafts with their child, we had a variety of crafts on offer for parents and children to make ranging from candle centre pieces, christmas wreaths, christmas trees, stars, reindeer, snowmen, penguins and decorating gingerbread biscuits.

Children have chosen for themselves what Christmas cards they wanted to make, playdough fun and decorating trees on the tuff tray with their peers.

Children put to use some of the the skills they have been practising this term in making Christmas decorations from fine motor skills, colour recognition, listening and following instructions given.

This week the children have been doing activities around the story of "Dear Zoo".

They have made paperchain snakes and lion's manes, developing fine motor skills and also learning about the animals in the story.

They have explored a "Dear Zoo" tuff tray where they have been able to carry out the sequence of the story as well imaginative play with the animals and making up their own stories.

Children have also made some handprint animals of their favourite animal from the story.

This week the children have been doing some activities around shape recognition and learning about shapes, helps children learn to differentiate between different objects and how many sides the different shapes have and children can explore how shapes are different from one another.

Children enjoyed shape stamping and building with coloured wooden blocks which also supported colour recognition and counting.

They also enjoyed going on a shape hunt around the nursery environment.

Children have had fun exploring the different animal tuff tray habitats, learning about the different animals and where they live, the names of animals and what their young are called, the foods that they eat.
Children role played with the animals that encouraged them to use their imagination.

Conversations with children in which animals are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and what these words mean.

We have also read animal story books and looked at factual books about different animals.

The children have had fun exploring colours while creating firework pictures experimenting in using different tools to help with fine manipulative skills. They have also made firework rockets and running around with them pretending to be fireworks and lots of loud sounds like bang, bang, bang to represent the noise of the fire works,

They have also discussed how everyone can keep safe around bonfires, sparklers and fireworks.

Children have continued to access different fun mathmatic activities supporting their counting and matching of numbers and beginning to recognise some numbers, they are learning to touch count.

They have been looking at the sequence of numbers 1-10 and counting is an early numeracy skill and counting helps children to learn the words for numbers and the right sequence for numbers – '1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10'

With the activities that the children have been doing around counting/matching numbers, it has been lovely to see the confidence grow in their counting skills.

The children have done some activities involving numbers and as well as counting they have been matching numbers and recognising numbers.
They have also used numbers in their everyday play from counting to 10 and beyond while playing hide and seek, counting jumps, how many steps it takes them to get to different places, how many bricks they use to build before it falls down among a few of the different ways they have used to count.

The children have enjoyed doing Auumn activities and Autumn has provided the children in learning about seasonal changes and engaging in conversations about what this might mean, from how they see the leaves change from green to some lovely colours, reds/yellow/brown/purple etc, talking about the change in the weather and animals that start to hibernate.

They have made Autumn wreaths, decorating trees and discussing what colours they will use. Wax leaf rubbings and describing patterns that the leaves made. Talking about some of the animals we might see, like hedgehogs, squirrels and foxes.
