At the end of our annual End of Year Celebration, which took place in the Auditorium of the Herongate Club on Thursday 16th July, we said goodbye to three of our pupils, Isaiah, Jamie and Trinity, who are now moving on to continue their education at college.

To round off our last full week of the Summer Term, Oaklands pupils enjoyed a day of fun sports activities, both at school and at the Herongate Club.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our planned Sports Day, which was due to take place on Friday 10th July at Hungerford Town Football Club, due to the extreme heat.

Throughout the day our pupils took part in a variety of inclusive games including Boccia, Goalball, Kurling and Adapted Rounders.

Everyone had great fun participating in all the different activities and at the end of the day all our pupils were presented with a special commemorative rosette!

On Wednesday 15th July Maple class brought their learning to life when they enjoyed a fantastic trip to Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens.

As they explored the park, our pupils discovered a wide variety of plants and animals. They were excited to see everything from lions, penguins, zebras and prairie dogs to wolves and ducks. One of the highlights of the day was riding the park's train, where they happily waved to passers-by as they travelled around the grounds!

After a busy day of exploring, Maple class finished their visit with a well-earned ice cream, which helped to cool them down before heading home. It was a wonderful day, and the children represented our school brilliantly throughout the trip.

Working closely with West Berkshire Council, members meet regularly to discuss issues that matter, influence decisions, develop ideas and help shape services and opportunities for young people across the district.

💬 What's the difference between the Youth Forum and the Youth Council?

Youth Forums are open events held throughout the year where any young person can come along, share their views, raise issues and have their say. They are a great way to make sure as many voices as possible are heard.

The Youth Council is a smaller group of young people who make an ongoing commitment to represent those views, work on longer-term projects and help turn ideas into action.

Six intrepid pupils from Beech class took a trip to the River Kennet at The Wilderness, Kintbury for ARK - Action for the River Kennet River School last week.

The River Kennet is a 45-mile-long chalk stream. It rises in Wiltshire, flows through the North Wessex Downs, and merges with the River Thames at Reading, Berkshire. It provides crucial natural habitat and feeds the historic Kennet and Avon Canal.

Our pupils used nets to find bullheads, a young minnow and lots of freshwater invertebrates. They saw banded demoiselles on the wing, cinnabar moth caterpillars on the riverbank as they waded downstream to experience some of the changes in depth and flow that the river takes on its journey to eventually flow into the Thames.

Our pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves during their visit and made the most of cooling down in the water on a very hot day!
