BIGOTS! The most dangerous group in the world.

Bigots are forever pointing the finger at everyone else: trans people, gay people, asylum seekers, immigrants, minorities, anyone they can portray as somehow different or inferior.

They seem to place themselves in the position of judge and jury, as though they are somehow morally superior and entirely free from human weakness or wrongdoing.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: no group of human beings is perfect. People make mistakes. People do bad things. That applies to every community and every section of society.

But there is one thing whose damage is far greater than the individual wrongs that bigots are so obsessed with pointing out: bigotry itself.

Bigotry spreads hatred. It dehumanises people. It turns suffering into something to jeer at. It encourages us to see human beings as categories rather than individuals. It teaches people to question the humanity of others while never questioning their own prejudice.

And perhaps most disturbing of all, it can make cruelty feel righteous.

So before you spend your life searching for faults in everyone else, perhaps ask yourself one simple question:

What is your prejudice doing to the world?

Because the problem isn’t that some people are different.

The problem is the hatred we choose to direct at them.

Curiosity before prejudice.

We all encounter people, identities and experiences that we don’t immediately understand. The easy response is to judge, fear or dismiss what feels unfamiliar.

But curiosity gives us another option.

Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with them?” ask, “What can I learn about them?”

Prejudice closes the door before the conversation even begins. Curiosity opens it.

You don’t have to understand everything to treat people with respect. Sometimes the first step is simply being willing to ask questions.

MYOB, GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE and UNDERSTAND THAT THE ONLY LIFE YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER IS YOUR OWN.

They build entire machines of outrage.

Petitions. Fear fuel. Moral panic generators. Endless “strategies” and 10,000-page reports. All to try and erase people who are just walking down the street, living their lives.

Meanwhile the actual solution is sitting right there in the sunshine:
Focus on your own life.
Let others get on with theirs.
Asylum seekers are not a threat.
They are not a debate.
They are not a “complex problem” that needs solving.
They are human beings who deserve the same basic freedom the rest of us claim for ourselves — the freedom to exist without being the target of someone else’s obsession.
If your energy is spent trying to control who other people are allowed to be, that says far more about you than it does about them.
Live and let live isn’t weakness.
It’s the bare minimum of a free society.

***********SOCIETY HAS GONE ROTTEN***********

Something truly terrible has taken hold. Cruelty is now worn like a badge of honour. Dehumanisation is cheered as “strength.” Being heartless is praised as “telling it like it is.” And it’s spreading fast — stoked by the likes of Donald Trump and his allies, who have made viciousness respectable again.

Take Tom Homan, Trump’s border tsar. When asked how you could deport people without tearing families apart, his answer was chillingly simple: “Send the whole family back.” Mothers, fathers, little ones — pack them all off, together or not, it makes no difference to him. That is not policy. That is cruelty, stripped of all pretence.

And it gets worse. I saw it said openly online: if someone is here seeking safety and expecting a child — send them back. They’ll only give birth to another immigrant. Another human being. Another life. Reduced to something to be shipped away before they’ve even drawn breath.

We watch people risk everything — their homes, their savings, their lives — to reach safety. Thousands have died crossing seas and borders, seeking a place to be safe. And how do we respond? We jeer. We make jokes. We mock the dead. Millions laugh, as though drowning families are just entertainment. That is not politics. That is the death of humanity.

And it doesn’t stop there. We see people thrown out of militaries, denied jobs, stripped of dignity — simply for being who they are. LGBTQ+ people are being pushed aside, denied care, denied respect. I know this personally: a friend of mine, trans, has already been denied essential medication. Funding for Pride parades is being cut, with thin, trumped-up excuses. Everyone knows what it means. Everyone sees it.

Years ago, someone told me: “Society has gone rotten.” I didn’t understand it then. I do now.

We look down on other countries — call them “backward,” “third world,” “less civilised.” But look at us. We lecture the world on human rights while our own hearts turn to stone. We sneer at the very people who have survived what we could not bear. We treat the vulnerable as vermin — and call it courage.

And the bitterest irony? The people we should admire most — the ones who still carry kindness, resilience, and humanity — are the very ones we push away. Immigrants. Refugees. People who have suffered more in a single year than most of us will in a lifetime. They still know how to be human. We appear to have forgotten.

Rotten societies don’t fall because of enemies from outside. They fall because they lose their humanity from within. And right now — we are rotting from the inside out.

“We shouldn’t be talking about asylum seekers in schools.”

Why not?

Because children are growing up in a world where asylum seekers are routinely described as “invaders,” “illegals,” or people who are somehow less deserving of compassion than everyone else.

Schools have a responsibility to teach children how to question prejudice, understand why people flee persecution and conflict, and recognise the difference between fact, fear and political rhetoric.

That isn’t telling children what to think. It’s teaching them how to think.

We teach about slavery, racism, war, poverty, religion and human rights because understanding difficult subjects matters. Asylum and migration are no different.

A child shouldn’t leave school believing that someone escaping persecution is automatically a threat simply because they’ve arrived from somewhere else.

Education should challenge prejudice, not quietly inherit it.

And if teaching children empathy, critical thinking and basic human dignity is considered “political”, perhaps we need to ask ourselves why.

Regarding my recent post - sorry if the way I said it upset anyone, so let me be clear:

This isn’t about asylum seekers turning on anyone. It’s about this simple truth: asylum seekers are human beings — exactly like the rest of us.

When people dehumanise others, label whole groups as “a threat” or “not real people”, they forget something very basic: we are all human. That means we are all capable of kindness, and we are all capable of anger. No group is all good or all bad — because no group is a single person. Individuals choose how to behave. Entire communities do not deserve to be judged by the actions of a few, or by lies told about them.

The message isn’t “they’ll treat you badly back”. The message is: stop treating people as less than human — because they are people, just like you. And when you treat anyone as an enemy, you shouldn’t be surprised if one day you find yourself on the receiving end of exactly what you’ve been handing out.

Hatred doesn’t care who it belongs to. It always comes back around. See the person — not the label.
