⭐✨📺🐍🦎🐠 Taylor Hill Animal Centre is appearing on The Yorkshire Vet! 🐠🦎🐍📺✨⭐

⭐ Tune in this Tonight at 8pm on Channel 5! ⭐

We’re excited to finally share a glimpse of a very special day at Taylor Hill Animal Centre, filmed during the official opening of our new Reptile House and Aquatics facilities. 🐍🦎🐠

Our college vet, Matt Jackson-Smith, joined us to officially open the new facilities and celebrate this exciting development for our animals and Animal Care students, with cameras from The Yorkshire Vet there to capture the occasion. ✨⭐

After a two-year wait, we’re delighted that the episode is finally hitting our screens! ⭐📺⭐

We’re incredibly proud of these fantastic facilities and the opportunities they provide for our students to develop practical skills while working with a diverse range of species. 🐍🐢🦎🐠

🌈 🐐 💛 Remembering Dolly 💛 🐐 🌈

Today we sadly had to say goodbye to our lovely Dolly, our African Pygmy goat, at the grand age of 14½ years old.

Unfortunately, Dolly was diagnosed today with tumours in her stomach, and we made the difficult decision to have her peacefully put to sleep. Her welfare has always come first, and we knew that letting her go before she began to suffer was the kindest thing we could do.

Dolly had been part of life at Taylor Hill for an incredible 14½ years and, during that time, helped generations of our Animal Care students learn about goat care, handling, health and husbandry. She was a lovely little character and very much part of the Taylor Hill family. 🐐

She even had her own moment of fame! Three years ago, Dolly featured in Veterinary Times after receiving specialist cryotherapy treatment for cancer — an unusual treatment in goats and one which gave us the privilege of having another three years with her. 💛

At 14½, Dolly certainly had a good innings and a life filled with care, attention and plenty of student admirers.

We are incredibly sad to lose her, but very grateful for all the years we had with her and everything she contributed to our students’ learning.

Sleep well, Dolly. You were a very special little goat and you will be greatly missed. 🐐🌈💛

🐑🐐 A visit from a familiar face today! 🩺💉

Our resident vet Matt – who you may recognise from TV’s The Yorkshire Vet – was at Taylor Hill today carrying out some routine health checks and treatments, as well as vaccinating our sheep and goats against bluetongue.

While he was here, Matt took some time to chat with our students about bluetongue, vaccination and the importance of protecting livestock against notifiable diseases. Our students were able to get hands-on too, helping to safely restrain the animals while their vaccinations were given.

It was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn directly from an experienced farm vet, ask questions and put their practical animal-handling skills into practice. And, of course, having our very own TV vet on hand made the experience even more memorable! ⭐🐑🐐

A huge thank you to Matt for sharing his time and knowledge with our students, while helping us keep our animals healthy and protected. 💚

Are you joining us at Kirklees College this September? 🎓

Our enrolment sessions start TODAY, with plenty of dates available over the next few weeks at Huddersfield Centre and Springfield Sixth Form Centre.

📅 Enrolment dates:
➡️ Thursday 27 August – 2.30pm–6.30pm
➡️ Friday 28 August – 10am–2pm (Huddersfield only)
➡️ Tuesday 1 September – 2.30pm–6.30pm
➡️ Wednesday 2 September – 10am–2pm
➡️ Saturday 5 September – 9.30am–12pm
➡️ Wednesday 9 September – 4.30pm–7pm
➡️ Wednesday 16 September – 4.30pm–7pm

🌿🦎 🐍 Going the extra mile for our animals 🦎🌿

Anyone who works in Animal Care knows that it’s never really a 9-to-5 job. It’s a career built on passion, dedication and a genuine commitment to the animals in our care.

We wanted to give a special mention to Sarah, one of our Animal Care Technicians, who has dedicated over 20 years to caring for the animals here at Taylor Hill. 💚

In her own time, Sarah has been busy growing and potting a range of species-appropriate plants for our reptile enclosures. 🌱 These have been carefully chosen not only to make the enclosures look beautiful, but to help create more naturalistic environments, support appropriate humidity levels and provide valuable environmental enrichment for the animals.

It’s a lovely example of the thought, knowledge and care that goes into animal husbandry beyond the everyday essentials — and of someone taking their passion for animal welfare that little bit further.

The enclosures are looking fantastic, the reptiles have some wonderful new additions to their environments, and Sarah’s hard work is very much appreciated.

Thank you, Sarah, for everything you do for our animals at Taylor Hill — both during your working day and beyond it. 🌿🐍🦎💚

Today is International Homeless Animals’ Day, an annual awareness day highlighting the millions of companion animals around the world without a safe and permanent home.

The day is not only about rescue, but also about prevention and responsible pet ownership. Neutering, microchipping, responsible breeding and making a lifelong commitment to our pets can all help reduce the number of animals becoming homeless.

🐶 Adopt responsibly
🐱 Neuter to help prevent unwanted litters
🏠 Remember that pets are a lifelong commitment
❤️ Support reputable rescues, shelters and foster carers
📚 Educate others about responsible animal care and welfare

At Kirklees College Animal Care, we believe educating future animal care professionals also means understanding the wider welfare issues affecting animals in our communities.

Today we recognise the amazing work of rescues, veterinary teams, volunteers and foster carers — and remember all those animals still waiting for somewhere to call home. 🐾❤️

🌿 Enrichment doesn’t have to be expensive! 🦜

Today our aviary birds have been enjoying some fresh natural forage in the form of Willow. Watching them strip the leaves, nibble the bark and investigate every twig is a fantastic reminder of just how important environmental enrichment is.

In the wild, birds spend a huge part of their day foraging, climbing, chewing and exploring vegetation. Providing safe, fresh branches encourages these natural behaviours, helps relieve boredom, offers mental stimulation and even provides material that many species will use for nesting.

The best part? It’s completely free – as long as it’s collected safely.

If you’re collecting forage for your own pet birds, always make sure:
🌿 You have correctly identified the plant and know it is safe for your species.
🌿 It has not been treated with pesticides or other chemicals.
🌿 It hasn’t been collected from the roadside or other polluted areas.

Once you’ve done those checks, let your birds enjoy exploring something new. You may be surprised at just how much time they spend investigating, chewing and playing with it! Be sure to share photos of your feathered friends in the comments !!! 📷 🐦
