Huddersfield Grammar School

Huddersfield Grammar School HGS is a thriving Independent School offering a nurturing learning environment for boys and girls aged 3 to 16.

Located in the heart of Yorkshire and nestled amongst ancient woodland. Huddersfield Grammar School is a wonderful place in which to spend your childhood. It is set in beautiful woodland surroundings and a warm, kind and purposeful feel permeates the whole community. For our young people, the school is a ‘home from home’. As an all-through independent school, we pride ourselves on our dedication to developing the whole child every bit as much as our strong examination results, and encourage our students to be future-focused, to aim high in all they do, and to make the most of the breadth of opportunities offered to them. Attentive pastoral care lies at the heart of our success and we go to great lengths to ensure that every child feels valued, enjoys school life and achieves more than they thought possible. With no more than 20 pupils in a class, learning is individualised to meet every child’s needs, and our modern facilities boast the latest technology. We believe that children achieve academic excellence when they are happy, inspired and excited by their learning every day. So whilst our teachers have the highest expectations, they also want the children to have fun, to provoke an emotional response to the subject and to have a sense of awe in the extraordinary world in which they live. And so they combine academic rigour with relentless creativity in the way that they teach, knowing that an engaged child is best placed to truly excel. Our comprehensive range of extra-curricular clubs and activities range for ballet to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, our sports teams rival the best schools in the region and regular drama and music productions are staged for all ages. One-in-four of our children learn a musical instrument, and a nature trail, Forest School space and mud kitchen ensure that our youngest pupils can explore the natural world freely in a safe learning environment. If you are not familiar with Huddersfield Grammar School, there is no substitute for a personal visit and I warmly encourage you to come to see us. It is only through such a visit that you can fully appreciate the kind, purposeful and happy atmosphere here.

FROM HOBBY TO HIGH STREET 👟

Robbie Cartwright is a young entrepreneur and the founder of Yorkshire Trainers, Huddersfield's first dedicated sneaker store. Having started buying and selling trainers as a hobby while still at school, Robbie transformed his passion for footwear, fashion and business into a thriving retail enterprise before the age of 20.

Established in 2018 and later opening its first physical store in Huddersfield, Yorkshire Trainers has grown from a small social media venture into a recognised destination for trainers, streetwear and specialist footwear services. Robbie's entrepreneurial journey has been built on determination, resilience and a willingness to take risks, demonstrating that success can be achieved through vision, hard work and perseverance.

Robbie has been featured in national media for his business success and has spoken openly about the importance of enterprise, self-belief and creating opportunities through passion and dedication. His story provides an inspiring example to young people of how entrepreneurial ambition can be turned into a successful career.

Today, as owner and director of Yorkshire Trainers, Robbie continues to develop the business while inspiring other young entrepreneurs to pursue their goals with confidence and determination.

We are delighted to welcome Robbie to Huddersfield Grammar School, where he will share his experiences of building a successful business from a young age and the lessons he has learned along the way.

💙 Celebrating our TAs

Today is National Teaching Assistants’ Day, so we’re taking a moment to say a big thank you to all of the TAs at HGS!

Whether it’s helping in the classroom, offering a little extra encouragement, answering questions or simply being there when a pupil needs them, our TAs make a difference every single day.

Thank you for everything you do for our pupils. We’re lucky to have you! 👏💙

Mia wins another one!

We’re delighted to announce that Mia has won first prize in the Y9–11 group at the ISA Writing Competition 2026!

Mia developed her entry through our Creative Writing Competition Club, part of the school’s IGNITE offer. Inspired by a title set by the ISA judges, she wrote Counting the Cost, a powerful story set in Kabul.

The judge's comments:

‘It is always difficult to select winners, as the entries are so varied and each has clear merit, but some essays did stand out. I have awarded first place to Mia S of Huddersfield Grammar School for her story ‘Counting the Cost,’ set in Kabul. With maturity and poise, Mia paints a picture of life in the war-torn city, focusing on what it means for one particular family. What struck me was the sense of calm and optimism she evokes in the midst of the turmoil.'

Congratulations, Mia - we’re incredibly proud of you!

🏃‍♂️ RUNNING FOR A REASON 💜

On Sunday 11th October, around 20 members of the Huddersfield Grammar School team will be swapping the classroom for Heaton Park as they take on the Heaton Park Run in support of Teenage Cancer Trust.

As a school community, this is a cause that means a great deal to many of us. We’d love your support as our staff lace up their trainers and take on the challenge together.

💜 Every donation, big or small, can make a difference.
