On Tuesday 13 October, you’re invited to The University of Huddersfield for the launch of our new Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence (IAAI).

You’ll hear how AI is already being used to solve real-world problems, support new discoveries and how it's creating opportunities in business and beyond. The HM Chief Inspector of Railways has visited the University to learn more about its research supporting a safer railway.

Richard Hines, the Chief Inspector and Director of Railway Safety at the Office of Rail and Road, met academics at our Institute of Railway Research and was given an overview of the key research currently taking place there, as well as a tour of its facilities.

Recent research by Huddersfield academics includes:

🚅 Investigating how hot weather affects rail infrastructure and using advanced modelling to reduce disruption from track buckling;

🚅 Developing real-time safety monitoring tools that use live railway data to identify emerging operational risks, including train approaches to red signals, driver behaviour and over-speeding; work that is helping the industry move from reacting to incidents to preventing them before they occur;

🚅 Using data from Wheel Impact Load Detectors (WILD) to identify unevenly loaded freight wagons before they lead to safety incidents, enabling more targeted and proactive maintenance.

💚 This week our Oastler and Daphne Steele buildings have been illuminated green to mark World Mitochondrial Disease Week, which aims to raise awareness of the genetic condition among doctors and the general public.

Mito, as it's also known, affects the body’s energy production leading to many symptoms. It can affect any part of the body and can easily be mistaken for other illnesses.

🎺 Calling all brass band fans! A new exhibition opens this weekend, with a free event tomorrow (Saturday 19 September) between 11am-3pm.

The heritage and history of two centuries of brass band music is being celebrated by Heritage Quay: University of Huddersfield Archives,. thanks to Brass Bands England (BBE).

'That’s Banding! 200 years of tradition and change' is a free display that delves into the Brass Bands England Archive, which has been housed in Heritage Quay since 2023 and is the world’s largest collection dedicated to brass band heritage.

The exhibition also reflects how brass bands evolved and diversified as they spread around the globe, with oral histories tracing the modern history of brass bands from the Diverse Voices project adding to the archive’s breadth.

Heritage Quay can be found on floor 3, Schwann Building, next to the canal, on our Queensgate campus.
