“But why?”
Honestly, two of my favourite words to hear in a Biology lesson. 🧬
I love it when a student challenges me.
And I’ve noticed that in a small group, students can sometimes feel braver about doing that.
One student asks a question.
Another says, “But why?”
Someone else jumps in with:
“I thought it was because…”
And suddenly we’re having a proper Biology conversation.
Not just me explaining.
Not just students listening.
We’re questioning, challenging, explaining and thinking it through together.
And that’s what makes a small-group lesson so dynamic.
Sometimes one student asks the question that another student was thinking but hadn’t quite found the confidence to ask.
And everyone benefits from the discussion that follows.
That’s one of the things I love about small-group tuition.
It isn’t simply about putting several students into the same lesson — it’s about creating a space where they can learn from each other as well as from me.
Because Biology is much more interesting when you feel confident enough to ask:

One thing I often see when students move from GCSE to A-Level Biology is that they don’t always make the connection between the two.

A-Level can feel like a fresh start — new content, new topics and a much higher level of difficulty.

But here’s the thing:

**You’re not starting again.**

So much of what you learned at GCSE is still relevant — and those skills become even more important at A-Level.

So don’t put your GCSE Biology skills away just yet! 🧬

**Build on them. Develop them. Use them.**

🏃‍♀️ **A-Level Biology isn’t a sprint. It’s more like a marathon. 🧬**

This Sunday, my daughter is taking on the Great North Run — 13.1 miles of determination, perseverance and keeping going when it gets tough.

And it got me thinking about students starting A-Level Biology.

The jump from GCSE can feel daunting. There’s more to learn, the pace is faster and the questions are more demanding.

But you don’t have to master everything at once.

You build your knowledge.
You develop your skills.
You keep going.
And, step by step, you get stronger.

**You’re not starting again — you’re building on what you already know.**

That’s something I’ll be talking about in my **FREE webinar on Saturday 19th September at 11.30am**, helping students (and parents) prepare for the leap from GCSE to A-Level Biology.

Every grade tells a story.
I’m incredibly proud of all my students this summer, including an A* at A-Level and a grade 9 at GCSE.
But the result I want to celebrate most is a grade 5 at GCSE Foundation level.
This student really didn’t like Biology and had struggled with it. His goal was simply to get more than a grade 3.
He achieved a 5. ❤️
We worked hard to make Biology relevant and memorable by connecting the content to real life — something he responded to brilliantly. I really admired his determination, especially when Biology wasn’t his favourite subject!
His other GCSE results were higher, including 6s and 7s at Higher Level, but this Biology grade represented a two-grade improvement in a relatively short space of time.
And he was SO proud.
So was I. 🥰
He’s a fantastic, chatty, enthusiastic young man who wants to become a sports journalist. I’m really going to miss our conversations — and I genuinely hope I see him on TV one day!
Something tells me I will…
Just not as a Science Editor! 😂
This is why I love tutoring. Success isn’t always about the highest grade. Sometimes it’s about achieving something you genuinely didn’t think you could.
And watching a student realise “I did it” is pretty special. 💚
