Every person's experience of dementia is unique.

John's story shows how personalised music therapy can support communication, emotional wellbeing and meaningful connection.

Music therapy isn't simply about singing songs.

It's a clinical, evidence-informed approach that uses music to support emotional wellbeing, communication, cognition and quality of life.

Every intervention is carefully planned around each person's needs, helping them experience moments of confidence, connection and joy.

Could You Help Us Find Our Next Treasurer?

For more than 30 years, North Yorkshire Music Therapy Centre has been transforming lives through the power of music, providing professional music therapy for children and adults in schools, healthcare settings, care homes, community venues, and from our centre in Hovingham. As demand for our services continues to grow, we're looking for a new Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and help support the charity's future.

If you know someone with financial experience who is looking to use their skills to make a real difference in their local community, we'd be incredibly grateful if you could forward the advert below. Previous trustee experience isn't required, just an interest in supporting a charity that helps people of all ages improve their wellbeing through music. Thank you for helping us spread the word.

🎥 Music Therapy in Action – Alice's Story

Alice's story is a wonderful example of how music therapy can support someone living with dementia.

Through regular music therapy sessions, Alice was able to reconnect with important parts of her identity, express her emotions, and build confidence again.

Her journey reminds us that dementia does not define a person, and that meaningful moments of connection are always possible.

Music doesn't just happen during a therapy session.

We work alongside care home staff and families to create personalised Musical Care Plans that become part of everyday life.

These may include:
🎵 Favourite songs during personal care
🎵 Rhythm to encourage movement
🎵 Familiar music to reduce anxiety
🎵 Singing to encourage communication

Small musical moments can have a lasting impact.

Sometimes behaviours such as agitation, anxiety or withdrawal are forms of communication.

Through music therapy, we help uncover what someone may be trying to express.

By listening carefully, building relationships and using personalised musical approaches, we support residents, families and care staff to respond with greater understanding and compassion.

That's the power of person-centred care.
