Something most boxing training won’t teach you

One of the benefits of hitting a solid training apparatus like this is that it teaches you about your margins of error.

When you throw a powerful punch, the force needs to travel through the wrist, forearm, elbow and shoulder in good structural alignment. Think of the fist as the point of an arrow and the forearm as the shaft — you want that structure travelling cleanly into the target.

The sand bag gives you feedback that pads and air simply can’t. If your wrist is slightly out of position, or the force isn’t travelling cleanly through your structure, you can feel it immediately. That feedback helps you understand and gradually reduce those margins of error.

Because when you eventually hit something genuinely solid, a small mistake in alignment can have much bigger consequences. You don’t want to discover your structural weaknesses for the first time when you’re throwing a full-power shot in a fight.

So this isn’t just about developing power.

It’s about teaching the body what good alignment feels like, building resilience through the striking structure, and making the margin for error smaller.

That’s what I mean by proper punching mechanics. šŸ‘ŠšŸ¼

Fighty-type people, this one’s for you. šŸ„ŠšŸ„‹

Boxing, and other combat sports spend a LOT of time putting us into flexion — rounded forward, shoulders in, chin tucked, ribs protected.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. We need those positions.

But if that’s where you spend most of your time, it’s just as important to practise the opposite.

Extension.

Opening through the front of the body. Moving the spine backwards. Creating space through the chest, shoulders, hips and abdomen.

For me personally, a lack of extension has contributed to some of the issues I’ve had over the years. And whenever I work on going backwards, it genuinely feels like my whole body gets a chance to breathe.

I feel more open. I breathe differently. I stand differently. And psychologically, there’s something about getting out of that constantly guarded, forward-folded position that just feels good.

It’s not about forcing your body into some ridiculous backbend.

It’s about keeping extension in the toolbox.

So fighty-type people… keep those backbends in the bank. šŸ˜‚

And if you try the one in the video…

Please do it better than me.

If you’re worse than this, there’s probably no hope for you. šŸ˜‚

Yoga is not just about flexibility.

It is the practice of concentration.

The warrior and the yogi both learn the same thing:

Focus the mind.
Control the body.
Hold your attention.

Arjuna understood this thousands of years ago.

The target is only half the battle.

The real practice is learning to see nothing else.
