Our "Buggy Bus" was back in action today for a very important mission: a trip to Tesco! 🛒
The children were on the lookout for the items on our shopping list as we navigated the aisles to find fruit for snack time and the ingredients we need to make a fresh batch of playdough. There was so much excitement as we searched the supermarket, with the children pointing out the apples, oranges and bananas in the fruit section.
A real highlight was our visit to the checkout. The children proudly chatted with the shop assistant, talking about our "buggy bus" and eagerly explaining, "We’re making playdough!" The buggy bus received quite a lot of attention and the children enjoyed waving to other shoppers and staff on the way back to the car!
Why our community trips matter:
Getting out and about is a vital part of the curriculum at Hayley's House, offering learning opportunities that can't be recreated inside a setting! It also supports many of the areas of child development:
Understanding the World: By visiting the shop, the children are learning about their local community, different occupations and the process of how we find and buy the things we need.
Communication and Language: Turns out Tesco fruit aisle is a brilliant place for a chat! There was so much to talk about, describing the sights and sounds around us. It’s these real-life moments that really help expand the children’s vocabulary.
Mathematics: We practised counting and talked about size and quantities (Big, small, bigger and more, less, the same) as our basket filled up.
PSED: These outings help the children grow in confidence and self-assurance. Navigating a public place and interacting politely with "the lady at the till" helps develop social skills and a sense of belonging.
Experiences like this turn an everyday task into a fun adventure, encouraging the children to be active, curious and confident learners within their own community!
