At Lyn Foster Childminding, children are welcomed into a calm, cosy, home-from-home space where they can learn, grow, and feel truly cherished. As I say in my curriculum, “children are cherished as unique individuals and learning happens through warmth, play, and meaningful experiences.”
My setting follows the EYFS and is inspired by hygge — soft lighting, natural materials, relaxed play, and plenty of time outdoors in all seasons. It’s all about helping children feel safe, settled, and ready to explore the world around them.
Every child begins their journey with me as a Unique Child. I take time to learn what they love, how they learn best, and what makes them feel confident. From there, I gently scaffold their development, supporting them as they grow and prepare for nursery.
Our days are filled with simple joys: baking, nature walks, stories, rhymes, singing, crafts, imaginative play, and mindful moments. Daily reading and singing are a big part of what we do — they help children build vocabulary, strengthen emotional bonds, and become confident communicators.
Across the seven EYFS areas, I support children through:
• Communication & Language
• Personal, Social & Emotional Development
• Physical Development
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the World
• Expressive Arts & Design
I also help little ones build the skills they need for nursery — independence, confidence, turn-taking, curiosity, and a love of stories and mark making.
Most importantly, I work closely with parents every step of the way. As my curriculum says, “I work closely with families to ensure your child receives consistent, loving support.”

I have one space available Monday–Thursday, 8am–5pm, for a little one aged 0–3 years to join our warm and welcoming home-from-home setting. 🧸

July time. We bid a sad farewell to one of our families that I have had the pleasure to look after all 3 of their children. We wish you all the very best for the future.
We have spent several days at Nymans this month discovering something new each time, from the secret garden, gargoyles, enormous plants, the play glade and rolling down grassy banks on a summers day. We have paddled in the sea, played in the cool of the woods, and been entertained by the gorgeous Katie of music bus. We have learnt new skills practicing hand/eye coordination posting bottle tops and building with blocks, developed new enveloping schemas wrapping up toys. Listened to stories everyday and practiced yoga. Lyn even got up at 3am with her own children to watch the sunrise!

June was a very busy month with soft play, Octopus sports day, our big toddle in the park raising money for Banardos with our Octopus group friends. Beach days, playing in the park and lots of learning through play. Practicing our writing skills, counting and building with bricks and learning colours. In the hottest days of the year so far we had outdoor water play first thing then in doors with fans on watching The hungry caterpillar, followed by reading the book and doing the puzzle learning to count through play. Can’t wait to see what fun July will bring.

Another busy month. Our new outside kitchen and play food has been a real hit. Lots of sharing out the food and counting how many plates are needed. Painting in the woods thanks to fellow childminders’Terri’. We have a New Guinea pig Chester. He was too cute to leave in the pet shop on his own. My own youngest (twins) turned 18 and we celebrated with a family get away. Lots of indoor play, outdoor play and National trust visits.

Looking for childcare for September 2026?

Wow what a great April we had, mostly spent in the garden and woods. We did our first trip to the beech this year, had a music session with our local Music Bus and just played. We found an empty birds nest in the woods and a dog fish on the beach. We said hello to spring as nature unfolded the blossom came out, the bluebells bloomed and my wisteria flowered.

This is a lot for any work place.
Let alone remembering that most of us work on our own.

Many of these changes are not minor.
They involve new training, updated policies, different admin systems plus reconsideration of financial sustainability and in some cases having to purchase new equipment.

And this is all around our job of actually caring for and educating young children for often over 40 hours a week, which is exhausting and comes with a huge amount of outside of hours work in itself.

Childminders are not imagining the strain.

Funded hours don’t cover our lost private time to do this work.

We can do it, but having space between updates or a good amount of notice rather than an immediate effect change with no prior discussion would go a long way!
If government departments could actually look ahead at the workload, because this is more than an update a month but also often happening all in one go…7 of the changes THIS MONTH ALONE.

We are real humans behind the work having to be at our best bright and early for little humans.

Plus funding should take into account the mandatory work being put upon us outside of contact time with children that we can’t add into our fee, Funding banning top up fees and limiting what we can charge for means we are working hundreds of unpaid hours, because none of this can be done when the children are in our care.

How we are surviving is magic in itself quite honestly, and still going above and beyond for the little ones in our care.

(Did I miss anything? I haven’t managed to even look at Scotland and Wales yet as, clearly I’ve been having to keep up on changes that affect me!)

March wow what a month as we quietly woke up from winter watching the days get lighter and longer. Enjoyed more sunshine and a few warmer days. We explored Nymans with their Winnie the Pooh trail, went to Coombes farm to see lambs calves and piglets, we spent an amazing morning at Warnham nature reserve playing in the woods. We could have stayed there all day! We had the garden completely cleared by Scott’s gardeners thank you x. I attended the childcare expo in London and saw an amazing talk from Michael Rosin. Author of many children’s books. I wrote an article for a childminding magazine and had it published. So many wonderful moments this month.
