Do Not Confuse Your Child's Wants with Needs

Children will always want more. More toys, more treats, more screen time, more time at the playground, etc. But wants are not the same as needs...

Our job as caregivers is not to be our children’s friends or to keep them happy all the time. Our role is to protect their well-being and guide their growth.

A child’s brain is not yet developed enough to know what is best for them. The prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for judgment, impulse control, and long-term thinking, does not fully mature until well into young adulthood. This means children are wired to seek immediate comfort, not to make decisions with their future health and development in mind.

That is why it falls on us to make decisions in their best interests.

Establishing and upholding boundaries provides the structure and safety they cannot yet create for themselves. These boundaries are not punishments, they are protections. They ensure children get what truly sustains them: rest, healthy eating habits, connection, play, physical safety, and emotional security.

Children will oftentimes feel frustrated or disappointed when we hold those boundaries, and that is okay! In fact, it is necessary. Working through those moments with the support of a calm, steady adult is how they build resilience and learn to regulate big feelings.

Wants bring comfort in the moment. Needs build the foundation for lifelong growth. Knowing the difference, and being willing to hold the line, is one of the greatest responsibilities of parenthood.

🩺 Updated childhood vaccination schedule šŸ’‰

Illnesses like measles and whooping cough can spread very easily between children who are not vaccinated. These illnesses can make children very sick, leading to hospital stays or lifelong problems. It is important that vaccines are given on time for the best protection. If a child is not vaccinated, they are not protected. It is never too late to have vaccinations.

There have been recent changes to the childhood vaccination schedule, please follow the link to this NHS page for more info: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/routine-childhood-immunisation-schedule/routine-childhood-immunisations-from-1-july-2025-babies-born-from-1-july-2024

If in doubt, don’t hesitate to speak to your GP or visit https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/campaigns/childhood-immunisations/ #1 😊
