And then it was the adults' turn! What a beautiful array of Christmas wreaths... A great way to start advent!

'Let your light shine!'
~ Matthew 5:16 ~
Operating as usual
A wonderful array of wreaths made by the children of St Mary's at this afternoon's HSA workshop. We're looking forward to seeing whether the adults can do as good a job this evening!
Children in Year R really enjoyed learning healthy recipes with their parents in our Phunky Food workshop this afternoon!
We're hiring! Looking for a job that fits around school hours? Look no further - midday play supervisors wanted. Click the link for further details... https://www.stmarysschoolhorsham.co.uk/Midday-Play-Supervisor/
The TTRS trophy has never been so closely contested as it was this week! On Thursday night, Years 3 and 5 were neck and neck, with a phenomenal 90% participation in each class... and the younger class had a higher score for accuracy. But by Friday morning Year 5 had crept up to 93% and equalled their younger rivals on accuracy, snatching the trophy from them in the nick of time.
Every player really does count, and despite being the only class to achieve 100% participation in the last month, even Year 4 have yet to achieve the 100% participation in a single week that would earn them the long-promised extra playtime.
Who will it be next week?
After much deliberation, our Raspberry Pi team have settled on their plan for this year's competition - designing and making a gadget to help pupils in school with anxiety to signal when they need help. We can't wait to see how it develops. Thank you to the fantastic team of volunteer parents who are leading this initiative.
What an exciting morning! We welcomed the travelling nativity from Wintershall and went on an advent journey, meeting different characters and animals from the Christmas story as we begin to think about preparing for Christmas!
Beautiful poppies by art club this week ❤️
We love Christmas time at our very special church! We hope you'll come and celebrate with us at some of the wonderful services we have planned in December this year!
This morning we held a special assembly for Remembrance Day. We learned about the symbolism of the poppy, and poured our prayers for peace into a ribbon to add to the church gates.
Year R enjoyed their visit to the library today, and each got to choose a book to borrow on their library card - great life skills!
Amazing work from art club once again!
Year R have been really enjoying their text this week, 'Look Up!' by Nathan Byron, and made these fantastic posters advertising a meteor shower. Great writing!
We strongly suggest everyone comes in wellies with slippers or indoor shoes in your school bag tomorrow! Spare socks / tights and a plastic bag for any wet clothes would also be a good idea. 👍
Parents of children starting school in September 2024 are warmly invited to attend one of our Open Days this term - come and find out what St Mary's has to offer. We hope to see you there!
We couldn't be more proud of Amy who has only gone and won the Bohunt Black History Month poetry competition!! Well done Amy!
Congratulations to Amy Barnett from St Mary’s C of E Primary School. She fought off tough competition to win our Black History Month Poem Competition. Please see below Amy’s winning entry. We delivered her prize of a voucher for Mr Simms Sweet Shop. Enjoy your sweet treats Amy!
Clay poppies ready for glazing ahead of Remembrance Day, to finish our topic on WWII... We can't wait to see how they turn out.
The wind and rain didn't stop Year 1 and 2 giving it their all on the athletics track today. Great running, jumping and throwing skills all round (even if hammer throwing with 6 year olds is rather hair-raising!)
We're so proud of our Basketball Team who were awarded the Spirit of the Games award for their manners, teamwork and positive attitude, which was noticed by staff from other schools at the tournament. 😍
Very proud of our church community for this achievement! We're working on our eco-school status too!
Congratulations to St Mary's Church Horsham on achieving a Bronze Eco Church award, well done everyone! The good news was announced in the Harvest Service, which focused on care of God's creation. St Mary's is Horsham's Parish Church founded in 1247, the building is Grade I listed. As part of their Eco Church journey, the churchyard is being developed for community needs and biodiversity. The churchyard bioblitz discovered 155 species of flowering plants, 48 mosses & liverworts.
Eco Church is A Rocha UK's award scheme for churches of all denominations, the free online survey and resources equip churches to care for God’s creation and take action for nature. https://ecochurch.arocha.org.uk/

LODGE HILL UPDATE:
After waking up to this beautiful view, the children were 'chirpy and enthusiastic about their activities after a good night's sleep' (according to Mrs M!) and are looking forward to a games night this evening. Mrs H reports that after being soaked through from completing a zip line and snow tubing in the driving rain, Ben declared 'This is the best day of my life!' Not long now 'til they're coming home to tell you all about it...
Well, these biscuits have a lot to answer for... at least we know our smoke detectors work!
Despite this batch being a little overdone, the rest were delicious and everyone did a marvellous job of responding calmly to an unexpected fire drill in wet weather - well done one and all!
An update from Lodge Hill:
Glorious weather today. The children have enjoyed their activities and Mrs Carter led a wonderful nature walk around the site. Currently enjoying a camp fire this evening (brought forward from tomorrow due to the forecast storm) and praying everyone gets some much needed sleep tonight!
Year R visited St Mary's Church this morning, where major building work is underway! The builders gifted us this piece of the church... It's over 800 years old! What do you think we should do with it? 🤷
Year 6 arrived safe and sound at Lodge Hill and have been getting stuck in to their first day of activities today! The teachers report they are already exhausted but everyone filled their boots at dinner, so they're hoping for a good night's sleep after some games this evening...
VACANCY: We are on the lookout for a part-time teacher, to start in Year 1 after Christmas. For further details, please visit the school website via the link below.
Please share and help us find the right person to work in our lovely school!
St Mary's CE Primary School Parents and carers with children starting school in September 2024 are warmly invited to attend one of our open mornings:
Next Tuesday at pick-up time, there will be a pre-loved books sale on the school gate. Please bring your pennies and buy some books to enjoy over half term... all funds raised will go straight back into buying new books for the school!
Lots of fun out on a walk hunting for signs of autumn and making journey sticks in Year R.
A wonderful time was had by Year R at Little Street this week... though we'd like to know what Mrs Humphreys did to end up in jail!
Year 1 went to church for their RE lesson today and learned all about being baptised and what a Christening service involves!
What an exciting day Year 6 had yesterday, as World War II 'Evacuees.' After meeting at the train station, being walked to their new school and trying to make a good impression on their new hosts, they took part in an air raid drill, learned to cook with rations, dug for victory, learned to 'make do and mend' by darning old socks, and helped build a bomb shelter on the school playground. The day finished with a walk to investigate evidence of the past in our local area.
The children have been getting creative ... but any ideas what this might be? It's just appeared on the playground! Guesses in the comments below 👇
All will be revealed after 3:30pm!
What a wonderful array of donations for our Harvest Festival. Thank you so much for your generosity - they will all be going to Horsham Matters Food Bank, where they will be gratefully received. ❤️
Year 2 have been busy baking this beautiful Harvest Loaf for tomorrow's Harvest Festival. We hope to see you in church at 2:00pm tomorrow!
Well done to the Year 3/4 football team who represented the school fantastically well at their first tournament on Friday. Mr Ellis commended their heart, enthusiasm and effort, saying he had 'never been prouder of a team!' There were wins, draws and losses but their spirits remained strong throughout - well done St Mary's!
Year 3 putting their historical enquiry skills to the test by investigating artefacts from the Stone Age, courtesy of Horsham Museum & Art Gallery this week.
Year 1 out and about investigating our local geography, with touch-maps and fieldwork. We followed the river and used all of our senses to explore our surroundings.
Thank you Nurse Ellie for teaching Reception Class all about how nurses help people!
An archaeological dig at Butser Ancient Farm helped Year 4 get to uncover evidence of life in Viking times as part of their history learning!
