Did you know there are 4 different types of cord clamping? 🤱🏼
This picture shows something called optimal cord clamping. This has become increasingly popular in recent years due to the health benefits for baby ☺️
Optimal cord clamping-
This takes roughly 3 mins. This is when cord is left for however long is necessary for it to loose it’s purple colour and finish pulsating. When it is white and limp, all the blood from the placenta has returned to the baby. This type of cord clamping Increases haemoglobin and iron leading to less risk of anaemia in the baby.
Early cord clamping -
This is when the umbilical cord is clamped within 60 seconds of baby being born
Delayed cord clamping -
This is just when it is clamped just after 60 seconds, but before cord goes white and limp.
Milking of the cord -
This is used when mother or baby require extra assistance, and there is less time to allow for optimal cord clamping. In this case the midwife can push and encourage blood flow through the cord at a quicker pace using their hands.

What affects the EDD (estimated due date)?🤰🏼
- Baby -
Baby will release a protien called fibronectin to initiate the process of the cervix ripening this helps to prepare the body for birth. Baby comes when baby is ready!
- Genetics -
The genetics of both birth partners can affect the due date. Depending on what week they where born themselves this can indicate if baby will have a shorter or longer term than expected.
- Ethnicity -
People with black or Asian heritage appear to have a shorter term of pregnancy than those of Caucasian heritage.
- Menstrual cycle -
Those with a longer than average cycle (longer than 28days) may have a longer than average pregnancy. The same goes for a shorter than average cycle, this can lead to a shorter than average pregnancy.
- The Sonographer -
Estimating a due date is a skilled procedure. The level of experience your sonographer has can affect the accuracy of the EDD.
