Expressive language is a continuum in child development, beginning at infancy.
This aspect of language refers to how we communicate our thoughts, feelings and desires with others. Expressive language is needed for learning, play, participation in activities and engaging with the world around us. As we develop new ways to communicate (visuals, gestures and spoken words) we are able to get our needs met in a timely fashion.
Related, is receptive language. Together these language types impact auditory processing and attention and play a huge role in overall language in social skills.

So true! ๐
Thatโs what itโs all about ๐
This is something I frequently see. A child may know that 5x2=10, but when asked to show it, they will show a 5 and a 2. When asked to explain they then often say that you need to get a 5 and a 2 and it makes 10. Having recall of times table facts is fantastic, but this is generally much more difficult when it's without understanding. Without understanding, such facts can't be applied - when finding other unknown facts, dividing or problem solving for example.
If you want to check whether a child understands what multiplication (or times) means, give them some counters, Numicon, Cuisenaire, coins or other items and ask them to show what a fact they can recall looks like.

Thinking of all those clients taking gcse. Your best is good enough and I'm proud of how hard you've worked x
Good luck to everyone starting their GCSEs this week and everyone about to start SATs, A Levels and any other end of year exams and assessments.
Remember, grades do not determine what you a capable of achieving. ๐
It is important to give them hope and understanding that WE DO HAVE A CHOICE!
Ouch! That hurt! :)

Gaps in receptive language may cause the following delays... https://ilslearningcorner.com/2017-06-how-to-discover-receptive-and-expressive-language-challenges-in-my-child/
๐ Task Initiation! Getting started is often the hardest step...Did you know it's not just about getting started, but a crucial executive functioning skill influenced by impulse control, perseverance, and cognitive flexibility? ๐กโจ
We see task initiation all day long...tackling homework, having a conversation, making an appointment, washing those dishes, getting off the couch and going to bed...task initiation plays a vital role in everyday life. But it's not always easy - sustained attention and problem-solving skills are key players too.
๐ชFeeling overwhelmed by big (or little) tasks? Break them down into manageable pieces is the first step. Here are more tips: https://www.theottoolbox.com/how-to-teach-task-initiation/
Let's talk about the term โschool ready".โ
โ
I really dislike it!โ
โ
It gives the impression we'd like families to prepare their child for a world they might not be ready for. In reality, we will get ready for the children in our new cohorts they don't need to get ready for us.โ
โ
โค๏ธ If you agree, give this a double tap.โ
โ
Last year I developed a leaflet that challenges this notion and offers practical support to families as their child transitions to school. And guess what? Knowing how to write their name isn't even on the list!โ

If you are subscribed to 'The Bubble', you would have received an email this morning containing the FREE PDF version, which you can put in new starter book bags or welcome packs.โ
