Our Book Group had a very good discussion this afternoon on Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides . The book has many different themes. Some of us enjoyed it, others didn’t, but that’s the basis for an interesting discussion. The weather forced us to have our meeting in the Victoria rather than in Tim’s garden.

Excellent monthly talk on Tuesday 7th July from Alan Hunton. His talk on 'the history of trees after the Ice Age' provided an interesting perspective on how trees migrated - moved North! - to the UK; how tree management via pollarding and coppicing changed the medieval landscape and the animals that lived below the canopy and on the forest floor.

Did you know, tree coverage was c.20% at the time of the Norman conquest and declined - shipbuilding, industrial revolution, industrial usage (bobbins for weaving and charcoal for iron) - to about 5% at the time of World War One.

Ove the last 100 years, tree planting programs have helped rebuild the coverage.

At our monthly meeting on June 2nd, we enjoyed an entertaining and informative talk from Stephen Brown on the experiences of being a driving instructor. I think a few of us in the audience would fail the on-line theory test, and would maybe struggle with some of the challenges of the moderns practical test! But we would have the common sense to know you don't have to reach the pedals on the passenger's side in a dual control car when sitting in the driver's seat, or that cat's eyes on the motor way don't get switched on at a certain time!

On 3rd March our monthly speaker was Angela Beaumont who shared her journey on a double decker bus tour trip in the 1970s from London to Nepal. What an adventure! Through Europe, various Balkan countries under Communism at the height of the Cold War, through Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.

Cultural experiences, 1970s sexism (and threats), danger, broken down rickety old bus, food poisoning, romances, and most of all the kindness of strangers!

Would such a journey be even possible today........?!?
