Last week, students in Hope Valley Pathways made pineapple upside-down cake in their Food technology lessons with Mrs Beeden.

They worked really hard on making sure their measurements were correct using the electronic scales and used electric whisks to combine their ingredients. All of their bakes were super-successful (and delicious!)

Hope Valley Pathways students enjoyed a great art lesson last week, where they made geckos and vessels out of clay, inspired by Antoni Gaudi. Using slab-building and sgraffito techniques, they worked incredibly hard to produce some fantastic creations.

Students spent previous lessons exploring Gaudi’s work and designing their final pieces. Once their creations have had their initial firing in our kiln, they will move on to decorating their work.

Hope Valley Pathways students have been using their senses to describe different fruits and vegetables.

The purpose of this activity was to try new foods they hadn’t eaten before and to explore the benefits of a good balance diet and the effects it can have on one’s physical and mental wellbeing.

Using all the ingredients that they liked, they then made a healthy stir fry to enjoy.

Last week, students spent the day at Meadowhall so that they could put learned monetary/budgeting and forward planning skills into practice.

Each student had a budget and planned ahead to purchase a Christmas gift for a family member and get some lunch. They had a really lovely day and picked out some super gifts for their lucky families!

Last week in their cookery lesson, Hope Valley Pathways students whipped up some delicious looking fajitas, with some students even going as far as making their own wraps!! Very impressive!

It’s great for students to try new flavours, textures and food combinations and to work on their kitchen skills. There were some fantastically well organised and tidy workstations in the food tech room, and everyone enjoyed sampling their finished product.

This term, students in year 12 and 13 have been visiting the National Trust properties at Dalehead and Edale End for group work experience sessions.

They’ve been helping with essential jobs such as litter picking in the carparks and making bird houses and learning useful outdoor skills like hedge laying and identifying, collecting and planting tree seeds.

Finding out what the Park Rangers do and getting hands-on experience is a great way to encourage students to think about what they might like to do once they leave education and is also a great help to the wonderful ranger team.
