Did you know that 72% of charities are in the early stages of digital development?

This means they are still building their digital skills, improving their systems or deciding what should happen next.

Digital maturity describes how well an organisation uses digital tools, information and skills in its everyday work.

Signs of good digital maturity include:

✅ Staff feeling confident with the tools they use

✅ Systems making everyday tasks easier

✅ Information being stored and shared safely

✅ Teams having time and support to learn

✅ Plans being in place if technology stops working

Every team will have different levels of digital confidence. That is why it helps to understand what people can already do and where extra support could make a difference.

At Cosmic, we put people at the centre of digital change. New technology will achieve far more when staff feel confident, included and supported.

Understanding the current position reveals the next step.

A digital skills audit, which is a structured check of the skills and confidence across a team, can provide that starting point.

🌍 Yesterday, Cosmic CEO Julie Hawker MBE joined educators, trainers and skills leaders from across South Africa for an international symposium hosted by Eastern Cape Socio Economic Consultative Council in partnership with the British Council .

Julie delivered a masterclass entitled:

“Opening Up a World of Possibilities: Empowering People with Essential Digital and AI Skills for a Work-Ready Future”

Drawing on Cosmic’s experience in digital inclusion, employability and workforce development, Julie explored how the right skills, confidence and support can help more people take part in our increasingly digital world.

Digital and AI skills are now essential for learning, work and entrepreneurship. Everyone deserves the opportunity to develop them.

The feedback received from Cerian at the British Council:
"Thank you for your great session today. A lot of interest, and colleagues wanting to explore further frameworks and models."

A huge thank you to the British Council, ECSECC and everyone who took part in this valuable international conversation.

Digital leadership starts with people, not technology.

We know it’s easy to focus on the latest AI tools, platforms and technology. But real digital change happens when people feel confident, supported and ready to try new ways of working.

For us, good digital leadership isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about being curious, setting a clear direction and creating a culture where people can learn, ask questions and try things out.

Trust matters too. When we involve people in digital change, they are more likely to understand it, use it with confidence and see how it can make their work easier and more effective.

At Cosmic, we help organisations build digital leadership, AI readiness, digital skills and workforce confidence with practical, people-focused support.

Is your organisation ready to lead digital change?

Cyber security can feel complicated, but safer working often starts with a simple habit:

Stop. Check. Go.

🔴Stop if an email, message or request feels unusual.

🟠Check the sender, link or payment details.

🟢Go only when you know it is genuine and safe.

Small checks like these help reduce risk for charities and businesses. But being cyber resilient also means having a plan for what happens if something gets through.

Would your team know who to contact? Could you keep your essential services running?
Would you know how to protect the trust of your customers, supporters or funders?

Our latest blog explains cyber resilience in plain English and shares practical steps charities can take now. The advice is also useful for businesses looking to strengthen their risk management.

Data sits behind almost every part of charity work.

Supporter details, donation records, volunteer information, case notes and safeguarding records all need to be collected, stored, used and deleted responsibly.

Good data management protects people, builds trust and makes daily work easier. Yet the 2024 Charity Digital Skills Report found that 31% of charities rated themselves as poor at, or not engaging with, collecting, managing and using data.

The five questions in our graphic offer a practical starting point for a team or trustee discussion.

Q. How confident is your whole team about the data your charity holds and how it should be handled?

Cosmic supports charities to develop the digital skills and confidence needed to manage information responsibly.

Is your organisation already using AI without clear guidance?

AI can help teams save time, develop ideas and work more efficiently. But people also need to know which tools are approved, what information must be protected and when a human check is needed.

A practical AI policy can help your organisation:
• Protect sensitive information
• Reduce mistakes and confusion
• Set clear boundaries for staff
• Create consistent ways of working
• Support responsible innovation

Your policy should explain what AI can and cannot be used for, how concerns should be reported and who is responsible for checking AI-generated work.

It should also be shaped with input from leaders, staff, IT, data protection and HR and reviewed as tools and working practices change.

Not sure where to start? Contact Paul Turner and Cosmic’s Tech Team at [email protected] for friendly, practical help with managing and protecting your data.

Are you introducing Microsoft 365, AI tools or new digital processes, but finding that confidence varies across your team?

You do not need a large IT department to build digital confidence. One well-supported Digital Champion can help skills spread across your organisation.

Our Digital Champions Programme helps staff support colleagues, encourage the use of digital tools and make new ways of working easier to adopt.

Across five live, practical workshops, participants can build confidence in areas such as:
• SharePoint and OneDrive
• Microsoft Teams
• Microsoft Forms and Lists
• Power Automate
• Microsoft Copilot
• Excel, Power BI and advanced Microsoft 365 tools

The programme is ideal for managers, IT and operations staff, confident digital users who often help colleagues, internal trainers and anyone who regularly supports others.
Each remote session lasts two hours. Participants can also learn alongside peers from other organisations and access useful resources to support continued learning.

The cost is £500 per participant.

Could someone in your team become a Digital Champion?
