The Devon and Somerset Gliding Club is the largest gliding club in the South West and has allowed its members to enjoy the magic of gliding for 60 years. We have a modern fleet of club gliders, good club facilities and a team of BGA qualified instructors who provide training to help new members let slip the surly bonds of earth and dance the skies on laughter-silvered wings. Trial lessons can be purchased and booked on our website dsgc.co.uk

Thursday 27 August

The day started off a little overcast and damp, with a low cloud base. The forecast suggested that things would brighten up as the day went on, so we set up the winch and launch point, ran out the cables, and then headed off for our daily briefing. After the briefing, we took all of the two-seater gliders, along with one Junior, over to the launch point....

Thu 27 August – Junior Nationals Lasham

There was heavy rain at 4:30am with thunder and lightning (the writer can confirm). With the weather predicted the briefing has been called for 11:00am, which allowed another lie in. Some of the junior glider pilots decided to play Met Roulette, gambling a scrubbed day, with a K8 glider ending up rigged in the briefing room…. A minimum distance task of 83km was set....

Wednesday 26 August

After weeks of great flyable conditions it looked liked things had reverted back to 'normal' as we were greeted at NHL with low cloud. After Pete Smith and Guy Adam's daily brief there was a delayed start waiting for conditions to improve. This gave us time to rig the Junior LRD after it's time at the Uffculme Show on Sunday....

Wed 26 August – Junior Nationals Lasham

Day 5, Task 5, flying day 5, another grid. Briefing at 10:30am, which gave Dan a slight lie in! Setting a 159k racing task Swindon - Oxford. After the obligatory ‘Juniors Photo’ at the front of the grid they were ready to go. First launch was at 12:15, Dan was on the 11th row so took his launch at 12:32pm. The gate opened at 12:56, and true to form Dan went early, making his own luck....

Mon 24 August – Junior Nationals Lasham

At the briefing a 109km racing task triangle was set, much to Dan’s disappointment! (as it would be diffiicult to compete with the water boys). Set up on the grid, this time fifth row for the Juniors, but behind the Wallace section of the Nationals. First launch was delayed a couple of times, finally happening at 12:30pm, Dan going at 12:37pm, (another very efficient launching procedure)....

Friday 21 August – Course Week

Last day of the course today and the first day to start with no rain! The morning started as usual by getting the gliders out of the hangar and washed. Mike kicked off the first of the flights in the Perkoz lasting only 6 minutes before returning, this theme continued throughout the morning with many short flights due to the lack of lift within reaching distance and the ridge not being active due to a crosswind....
