28 August is the Makaton International Awareness Day. At Treloar’s, Makaton assists staff and students to communicate on a daily basis.

During our work-up week, the Makaton tutors run a range of Makaton training: including Makaton Level 1 and 2 courses and our ‘taster’ sessions.

Makaton is really beneficial for a lot of our students. It is a language programme which uses symbols, signs and speech to help develop essential communication skills. Whilst some students may not physically sign back to staff, they still use Makaton as a comprehension tool to aid their understanding of what people are communicating to them.

🐾 Happy International Dog Day! 🐾

Today we celebrate dogs of all shapes, sizes and roles—from beloved family pets to loyal service and protection dogs. More than just companions, dogs bring joy, support and often life-changing help to those around them.

We don’t have to look far for an example of an “extradoginary” pup: meet Stanley, a valued member of Treloar’s Counselling Team.

As part of his training, Stanley has been practising and engaging in onsite and offsite activities that may help him provide therapeutic support for students in 1:1 counselling work of Judith Horwell, Specialist Counsellor at Treloar's but also Stanley's owner and trainer.

Stanley’s new skills, alongside Judith’s experience as a counsellor, can help Treloar's students build their confidence, develop increased self-esteem and feel more empowered. Stanley’s aim is to help students gain self-agency and develop strategies to help them feel more emotionally regulated.

Treloar’s Got Talent is a stand-out event in the college calendar, and every July, we see the culmination of weeks of rehearsals, auditions and preparation for its final.

There is always a panel of student judges who embrace their role, sharing praise and positivity with every performer. This year's event was hosted by college student Ian.

Thank you to all the performers and backstage crew for helping create this wonderful event. Overcoming nerves to perform in front of a peer group helps students build their confidence and find their voice, creating memories that last a lifetime.

Results day is a moment of pride for the entire Treloar's community. While the national focus often remains on statistics, we measure success by a much truer metric: the scale of the hurdles our students overcome, and the incredible determination they show throughout their learning journeys.

Our curriculum is as unique as our students, spanning a vast range of learning pathways with students following highly individualised accredited pathways. We want to loudly celebrate everyone who completed their Entry Level qualifications this year. These achievements represent vital independent living skills, self-advocacy, and determination. They are a true foundation for the future, and we could not be prouder of the hard work behind them.

We also want to recognise the monumental effort of students who sat their GCSE examinations. For students at Treloar's, a national exam demands an extraordinary level of physical stamina, assistive technology, and emotional resilience. To pursue academic subjects in this way while navigating their own complex daily needs is a massive feat.

None of this would be possible without the specialist multi-disciplinary teams whose unwavering 'can do' attitudes ensures our students know no limits.

At the beginning of July, we were delighted to welcome ABRSM examiner David Gostick for our Open Music Assessments on the Clarion and voice.

Fourteen students took part, including six college students as part of the DFE pilot we ran this year. The students performed brilliantly and were so pleased to receive their certificates - a wonderful culmination of their hard work throughout the year in orchestras and 1:1 lessons.

A big thank you to peripatetic teachers Oliver and Hayley for preparing the students for their assessments and well done to everyone for your wonderful achievements!

Today, Costa Coffee has released a video celebrating its partnership with Treloar’s.

The video features Brandon, one of our students, sharing the benefits of gardening and being outdoors, and the positive impact these experiences have had on his wellbeing and development.

We're very grateful to the Costa Foundation for supporting opportunities that enable young people to learn, grow and connect with nature.
