October is AAC Awareness Month—a time to shine a spotlight on the transformative power of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

At Treloar's, almost two thirds of students are non-verbal or require AAC to support their communication. Our team of professionals, including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and assistive technologists, work together to find the best solutions that meet the individual communication needs of each student.

This week, Treloar's students are working on a display, "The Tree of AAC" as part of our AAC celebrations. It will explore how AAC has developed over the years, highlighting how technology has evolved over time.

🎉 Dermot O’Leary joins our 120th Anniversary Gala!

We’re delighted to announce that Dermot O’Leary will be joining us as our DJ for The Treloar’s Gala Dinner on Friday 16 April 2027!

Best known for his work across some of the UK’s biggest television and radio shows, Dermot will be bringing a mix of indie classics, 90s alternative anthems and party tracks to the dancefloor.

Dermot’s DJ set will be the grand finale of our evening, rounding off the celebrations in style!

Taking place at the iconic Guildhall in London, our gala will bring together supporters, partners and friends to celebrate this incredible milestone and raise vital funds to support young people with physical disabilities.

We are excited to be expanding our outstanding Physiotherapy Team and are looking for a dedicated physiotherapist to join us on a full-time, term-time only basis.

Working within our multidisciplinary team, you will support students with complex neurological and respiratory needs, delivering assessment, treatment and ongoing management while making a meaningful impact every day.

Treloar's Swim Squad took part in the Special Schools Swimming Gala in Basingstoke on 2 October.

The students competed in the 20m freestyle, 20m backstroke and 40m backstroke. A fantastic effort from all three! They were also awarded participation medals by the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane.

Our students were fantastic ambassadors for Treloar’s, demonstrating hard work, teamwork and collaboration with other schools. Their efforts made such a positive impression that Basingstoke Blue Fins are keen to work with us to make a future Treloar’s School Gala a reality!

Our Progress and Transition Team works collaboratively with families, students and external stakeholders to prepare young people for life beyond Treloar's.

Archie, is a former Treloar College student who left us in 2025 and made the transition from college to a supported living community. This was an important step from education to residential living, supported by a tailored approach to meet his individual needs and aspirations.

Archie said: “When I started at Treloar’s I dreamt of having a job one day but didn’t know how to make it a reality. (...) I now live in supported living community where I run the local radio station and have some freelance video editing work.”

Tour de Treloar: Inspiring a love of cycling

Students enjoyed an incredible day of cycling activities delivered in partnership with Newbury Velo and British Cycling as part of their Limitless Festival programme.

The event encouraged students to see cycling as more than therapeutic input, helping them build confidence, develop new skills and experience the enjoyment, independence and well-being benefits that cycling can offer.

From slalom courses and tight turns to time trials and skid circles, students embraced every challenge with determination and enthusiasm. The action continued indoors too, with students clocking up miles on MotorMeds bikes while taking part in virtual road races and mountain bike trails in our immersive room.

We were also delighted to welcome para-cyclist Felix Barrow, who shared his inspiring journey and showed students how sport can open doors, build confidence and create new possibilities.

A huge thank you to British Cycling, Paracycling and Newbury Velo for their encouragement, expertise and support. Together, we created opportunities for students to challenge themselves, celebrate their achievements and experience the joy of cycling.

Our college students from the Skills for Life pathway enjoyed a sensory autumn experience, discovering seasonal sounds, textures and natural materials through interactive activities.

Across four sensory stations, students listened to autumn sounds, explored tactile resources and got creative with leaf printing.

The session encouraged communication, choice making, sensory exploration, creativity and active participation, while helping students develop their understanding of the autumn season.

Last week, we welcomed back Robert Food and the team from Barclays Corporate to Treloar's.

The team's mission was to help prepare for our upcoming Dummer Fair on 7 and 8 October. Armed with gloves and plenty of enthusiasm, they got stuck into harvesting lavender, carefully stripping it from the plants and bagging it up ready to be sold at the fair. Their support has helped us get ahead of preparations and means we'll have plenty of lavender products ready for visitors to enjoy next week.

Corporate volunteering days like this make a real difference, not only by helping us tackle jobs that would otherwise take much longer, but also by building valuable connections with businesses that share our commitment to supporting young people with complex physical disabilities.

A huge thank you to Robert and everyone at Barclays Corporate for giving up their time to support Treloar's.
