🇪🇸✨ SPANISH CLASS — EL VERBO FALTAR 🧩⏳💬

🎯 Hoy vamos a estudiar FALTAR a fondo

🧠 1. 💰 FALTAR = NO TENER / NO HABER SUFICIENTE

👉 A alguien + LE FALTA + cosa

* Me falta dinero. 💷
* A David le falta tiempo. ⏰
* Nos falta información. ℹ️
* A la casa le falta luz. 💡

🔑 IMPORTANTE

En inglés pensamos:

I lack money.

Pero en español pensamos casi al revés:

Me falta dinero.
Literally: Money is lacking to me.

Me falta una hora. ⏰
Me faltan varias cosas. 📦

⏳ 2. FALTAR = QUEDAR / REMAIN

Una de las estructuras MÁS frecuentes:

👉 FALTAR + tiempo + PARA + algo

= to have X time left until something

⏰ Faltan seis días para el cumpleaños.
🎂 Faltan dos horas para la clase.
🎄 Faltan tres meses para Navidad.

⚠️ Mira el singular/plural:

Falta una semana.
Faltan dos semanas.

🙋‍♀️ 3. FALTAR = NO ASISTIR / NO IR

👉 Faltar a + lugar/actividad

🏫 Faltar a clase = not attend class
💼 Faltar al trabajo = not go to work
📅 Faltar a una reunión = miss/not attend a meeting

Examples:

Ayer falté al trabajo.
No quiero faltar a la reunión.
Ha faltado a varias clases este mes.

😡 4. FALTAR AL RESPETO

👉 Faltar al respeto a alguien

= to disrespect someone

⚠️ La estructura es:

FALTAR + AL RESPETO + A ALGUIEN

No me faltes al respeto. 😡

🧹 5. HACER FALTA = TO BE NEEDED

Esta estructura es SUPER importante. ⭐⭐⭐

👉 Hacer falta = to be needed / to be necessary

Hace falta limpiar la cocina. 🧹
= The kitchen needs cleaning / It is necessary to clean the kitchen.

Me hace falta descansar. 😴
= I need to rest.

Nos hacen falta más personas. 👥
= We need more people.

Again:

Hace falta → singular
Hacen falta → plural

❤️ 6. ECHAR DE MENOS / ECHAR EN FALTA

Another very common expression:

💭 Echar de menos a alguien

= to miss someone

💭 Echar en falta algo/alguien

= to miss / notice the absence of something or someone

Echo de menos a mi familia. ❤️
Eché en falta su apoyo.
Se nota que falta alguien.

Echar en falta is particularly useful in more formal or advanced Spanish. 🎓

🚨 7. FALTARLE ALGO A ALGUIEN

This is where Spanish can feel completely backwards to English!

A mí me falta paciencia. 😅

A ella le faltan recursos.

A nosotros nos falta experiencia.

A ellos les faltan pruebas.

The thing that is missing controls singular/plural:

👉 Me falta paciencia.
👉 Me faltan dos cosas.

🧩 8. FALTAR + PARA + INFINITIVE

Another useful structure:

Me falta mucho para terminar.

= I have a long way to go before finishing.

Todavía nos falta mucho para conseguirlo.

= We still have a long way to go to achieve it.

No te falta mucho para acabar.

= You haven’t got much longer to finish.

This can be literal or metaphorical. 🚀

🇬🇧➡️🇪🇸 150-WORD TRANSLATION CHALLENGE

📱💬 Socialising, conversation and feeling connected

Nowadays, many people feel that they lack time to meet others in person. We have social media, messages and video calls, but sometimes something is still missing. It is easy to spend hours looking at a screen without having a real conversation.

Socialising can be extremely valuable because it gives us opportunities to practise communication, share ideas and learn from other people. Sometimes we need more confidence before speaking, but confidence comes with practice. We should not miss opportunities to talk simply because we are afraid of making mistakes.

When we meet other people, we often discover that they have the same worries and difficulties as we do. We may also realise that what we were missing was not another message or another notification, but genuine human contact.

Of course, social media can be useful, and it can help us stay connected. However, it is important not to forget how much we can gain when we actually meet, speak, listen and laugh together.

✍️🔥 FINAL CHALLENGE — FALTAR x 100

🎯 Your mission:

Write a 150-word text in Spanish about something you need, something that is missing, something you have left to do, or something you miss.

🇬🇹 DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS💀🪦🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼

GUATEMALA

A little introduction in English

David ( one of our students) is going to visit Guatemala en October, a beautiful country in Central America famous for its volcanoes, Maya culture, colourful textiles and delicious food. 🇬🇹

Día de Todos los Santos and Día de los Mu***os are celebrated mainly on 1st and 2nd November. In Guatemala, these days are not usually scary like Halloween. They are a time to remember, honour and celebrate loved ones who have died.

One of the most spectacular traditions is the Giant Kite Festival (Festival de Barriletes Gigantes) in places such as Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez. People create enormous, colourful kites, sometimes many metres wide! 🎨🪁

⸻

If David tries only one traditional food during this celebration, he should definitely look for fiambre!

😋 FOOD DAVID SHOULD NOT MISS

🇬🇹 Fiambre – The most traditional food for 1st November!
🫔 Tamales – A very popular traditional dish.
🍲 Pepián – One of Guatemala’s most famous traditional stews.
🍌 Plátanos fritos – Fried plantains, often sweet and delicious.
☕ Guatemalan coffee – Guatemala is famous for its excellent coffee!

👗 DOES DAVID NEED A COSTUME?

Not really!

Día de los Mu***os in Guatemala is not generally a carnival where everyone dresses in costumes.

David can wear normal, comfortable clothes, especially if he is visiting the Giant Kite Festival or travelling around. 🎒👟

However, there may be:

* 🎨 Cultural events
* 💀 Special artistic face painting
* 🎉 Local celebrations
* 🪁 Festivals and parades in some places

Halloween costumes are more connected to Halloween on 31st October. Día de los Mu***os is more about family, culture, memory and tradition.

🎃 TALK ABOUT YOUR OWN TRADITIONS!

✍️ Writing and speaking activity

Tell us about traditions in your country or family.

You can talk about:

* 🎄 Christmas
* 🎃 Halloween
* 🐣 Easter
* 🎆 New Year’s Eve
* 🎂 Birthdays
* 👨‍👩‍👧 Family celebrations
* 🌹 Remembering people who have died

Questions:

1. What is your favourite tradition?
2. How do you celebrate it?
3. What food do you eat?
4. Who do you celebrate with?
5. Do you wear special clothes?
6. What traditions did you have when you were a child?
7. Have traditions changed over the years?

🎃 AND WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HALLOWEEN?

💀 Do you like Halloween?

🎃 Do you celebrate it?

👻 Did you celebrate Halloween when you were a child?

🍬 What did you do: trick-or-treat, parties or something else?

🧙 Do you wear a costume? What was your favourite costume?

💀 Do you prefer Halloween or Día de los Mu***os?

🌈 Do you think Halloween and Día de los Mu***os are similar or completely different? Why?

⭐ Final discussion:

In your opinion, is it better to remember people who have died in a sad way, a happy way, or both? Why?

🇪🇸 🍼👼CLASS: HOW TO START TEACHING SPANISH TO VERY YOUNG CHILDREN

( We are starting a new group for kids and parents write me the word BABY and I send you all the info)

Cómo empezar a enseñar español a niños pequeños
Level: Advanced Spanish
Suggested age of children: around 2–4 years old
Main skills: reading, speaking, translation, vocabulary, discussion and writing

There isn't one magic age at which a child must start learning another language. However, early exposure is extremely valuable, particularly because young children are naturally attentive to sounds, rhythm and pronunciation.
For a three-year-old, Spanish should not feel like a traditional lesson. At this age, the objective is not to memorise grammar rules or complete worksheets. Instead, children should hear Spanish frequently and associate it with people, play, movement, songs, objects and positive emotions.
At home, parents can introduce Spanish naturally during everyday activities: getting dressed, eating breakfast, tidying toys, going to the park or taking a bath. Repetition is very important. The same words and expressions can appear again and again until they become familiar.

Another excellent option is a small parent-and-child Spanish group. Children can sit in a circle, sing songs, practise sounds, identify colours and objects, move around and play simple games together.
For pronunciation especially, songs, rhymes and repetition are extremely useful because children hear the sounds repeatedly without feeling that they are studying.
The key principle is simple: less pressure, more exposure and lots of interaction.

🎵 2. Canciones infantiles en español

These are particularly useful because they combine repetition + movement + vocabulary + pronunciation.

Teacher tip: Don't just play the song. Stop occasionally and ask: ¿Dónde está la cabeza? ¿De qué color es? ¿Cuántos hay? ¿Qué está haciendo? This turns passive watching into active language learning.

reforzar el vocabulario — to reinforce vocabulary

🧸 4. TEXTO PARA LEER / TRADUCIR — 150 palabras
Writing

🧠 5. EXTRA INFORMATION — READ AND TRANSLATE
Why learning languages is good for the developing brain
Writing
Learning another language is much more than learning a list of new words. When children hear and use two languages, they constantly experience different sounds, vocabulary systems and ways of expressing ideas. This gives them opportunities to practise attention, listening and switching between linguistic systems.
Early childhood is particularly interesting because the brain is highly adaptable and children are naturally sensitive to the sounds and rhythms of language. Regular exposure, meaningful interaction and repetition can therefore create a strong foundation for future language learning.
However, it is important not to exaggerate the scientific evidence. Researchers have investigated whether bilingual children have a general cognitive advantage, especially in executive functions such as inhibition, attention and cognitive flexibility. Some studies have reported benefits, but large systematic reviews and meta-analyses have found that the overall effects are small, inconsistent and sometimes disappear after accounting for publication bias.
The strongest reason to teach languages is therefore not that bilingual children will automatically become “more intelligent”. It is that languages give children another way to communicate, understand other cultures and interact with the world.

💬 6. CLASS DISCUSSION
Ask your students:
¿Cómo aprendiste tu primer idioma?
¿Tus padres te hablaban mucho?
¿Veías dibujos animados?
¿Escuchabas canciones?

🎯 Teaching challenge
Imagine you have a group of four three-year-old children.
You have:
🟥 a red basket
🟦 a blue basket
🟨 a yellow basket
🟩 a green basket
🧸 toys
🐻 animal cards
⚽ balls
🎵 music

Create a 15-minute Spanish activity.

Your students have to explain:
What vocabulary would you teach?
What would you say first?
What game would you play?
What song would you use?
How would you keep the children engaged?
How would you repeat vocabulary without making the activity boring?

🇬🇧 7. FINAL WRITING TASK — 150 WORDS

Writing
✍️ Write approximately 150 words
September is here again! How does the return to school affect you?
Write about your own experience. Perhaps you have children who are going back to school, perhaps you work in education, or perhaps September does not change your routine at all.
You could talk about:
how you prepare for the new school year;
whether you enjoy the routine of September;
how your children feel about going back to school;
whether you miss the freedom of summer;
what you normally do when autumn arrives;
or simply how you prepare yourself mentally for the long British winter! 😆
Do you enjoy the colder, darker months, or do you start counting the days until spring?
Try to use some vocabulary from today's lesson, especially words related to learning, children, routines, activities, attention and teaching.

📖 Translate this text into English:

Back to school means new notebooks, new pens and, for me, far too much stationery! 😆 I absolutely love stationery, so I always have several notebooks in different colours. I have blue pens, black pens, pencils, coloured pencils, markers and highlighters. I honestly have so many that I sometimes forget what I already have!

My favourite thing is choosing a new notebook at the beginning of the school year. I like writing my name on the first page and keeping everything organised. I also love colourful markers because they make my notes much more interesting and easier to remember.

When I was at school, I always had a pencil case full of things. I didn't necessarily use everything, but I liked being prepared! 😆 What about you? Do you love stationery too, or do you prefer to keep things simple?

☔ Clase Especial: ¡Queremos que llueva! 🌧️✨

- Era (Ser) → cualidad esencial: El niño era alto / Era maestra
- Estaba (Estar) → estado temporal: Estaba cansado / Estaba en casa

💡 ¡Queremos que llueva! → Subjuntivo

🔄 Ejercicio 2: Traduce al español 🇪🇸

(≈150 palabras)

Will it rain this August? Many people in Britain ask the same question every summer. For a long time, everyone believed Spain would always be hot and dry, while here it would always be grey and wet. Now we are not so sure. Weather reports say things are changing: more rain in Spain, more sunshine here. If the weather stays nice, we think fewer families will travel to Spain in August. They will stay home, visit the coast, or enjoy gardens instead. We might even start saying: “We want it to rain!” because too much sun feels strange here.
