𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝘆𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?

One of the questions I ask is:

𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿?

In other words, can they explain their ideas really well, but struggle to show the same level of knowledge when they have to write it?

𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀?

✏️ Writing involves lots of things happening at once.

A child may know exactly what they want to say, but they’re also having to organise their thoughts, structure sentences, spell, punctuate, write and remember what they wanted to say next.

🧠 If they have to stop and think hard about a spelling, they may lose their train of thought.

✏️ If handwriting is slow or takes a lot of effort, their ideas may be coming much faster than they can physically write them.

💭 If they find it difficult to hold information in mind, part of a sentence or their next idea can disappear while they’re concentrating on something else.

🔤 Some children even change what they want to write. They may choose an easier word because they know how to spell it, shorten a sentence or leave an idea out altogether.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁?

A child who can give a detailed answer when talking may produce something much shorter and simpler when they have to write it.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿?

It helps me understand whether the writing I’m seeing really reflects what that child knows and can do. It’s one part of the wider picture I build when carrying out a dyslexia assessment.

What a summer term… 😂

Year 6 SATs, GCSEs AND A-Levels all in one house! I’m not sure I’d recommend that combination 😬

But results are finally all in and I couldn’t be prouder of all three of them 💗

Between exams, results, running Holme Valley Dyslexia Centre, two crazy puppies 🐶🐶 and a husband 😂, I’ve somehow managed to keep everything going and just about hold on to my sanity!

And now it’s all change again in September… one starting high school, one starting college and one heading into the world of work. How did that happen?!

Just over a week to go, then it’s back to business for all of us… and hopefully a slightly calmer September! 😂

A little update to my website 💗

I’ve spent some time updating my website to make it clearer and more useful for parents who are considering a dyslexia assessment for their child.

There’s now more information about what I assess, what happens on the day, what’s included in the report and the different assessment options I offer.

I’ve also added some of the lovely feedback I’ve received from families. I now have 38 five-star Google reviews, which I’m incredibly grateful for.

I can highly recommend Ping Tutoring for those looking for multi-sensory maths tuition 💗

My September maths clubs are filling up nicely, and as we get nearer to the end of the holidays the enquiries usually come in thick and fast.

DON’T LEAVE IT TOO LATE!

These clubs are incredible value at £7 per session (bookable as a half termly block, like swimming lessons). The usual cost of tutoring in this area from a QUALIFIED and EXPERIENCED teacher is upwards of £35 per session.

𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗦 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗟 𝗪𝗜𝗡! 🎉

Over the past year, I’ve had more and more schools across Kirklees, Barnsley, Wakefield, Sheffield, Oldham, Leeds and surrounding areas recommending me to parents for dyslexia assessments.

As a thank you for all the recommendations and support, I’d like to give something back. 💗

I’m offering three schools a free 60-minute dyslexia consultation with me.

Each consultation will begin with a short overview of dyslexia and some of the common signs to look out for. The rest of the time can then be used to discuss whatever would be most useful to your school.

This could include:

⭐ Practical strategies for supporting pupils in the classroom
⭐ Dyslexia and literacy support or intervention
⭐ Individual pupils you have concerns about
⭐ Whether further investigation or assessment may be helpful
⭐ Any other questions around dyslexia and literacy difficulties

The consultation can be with the SENCo and/or individual teachers, TAs or other relevant members of staff, with up to three members of staff attending at a time.

The 60 minutes can be used as one 60-minute consultation or split into two 30-minute consultations if that would be more useful.

Beforehand, I’ll ask each school to let me know what they would particularly like to discuss so that I can prepare and make the best use of the time.

Schools are welcome to use the consultation to discuss individual pupils. If an identifiable pupil is going to be discussed, written parental consent will be required in advance before any information about the pupil is shared with me.

It’s completely understandable that children can feel nervous about coming for a dyslexia assessment, especially when they don’t really know what’s going to happen.

I always take time to help them settle in and feel comfortable before we start.

We chat, have breaks when needed and I explain what we’re doing as we go along.

I never refer to what we’re doing as tests or an assessment with the child. We just talk about the different 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 we’re going to do together.

If a child is particularly anxious, I can also create a personalised 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 before their assessment. This can help them see where they’re coming and what to expect.
