If you’re child is preparing for the CSSE 11+, it helps to know exactly what the exam includes — and just as importantly, what it doesn’t.
The CSSE 11+ is made up of just two papers: English and Mathematics.
The English paper lasts 60 minutes in total, including 10 minutes of reading time.
The Mathematics paper lasts 60 minutes.
The English paper focuses on reading comprehension and extended writing.
Children need to read carefully, understand what they have read and communicate their ideas clearly in writing. Spelling and grammar matters!
The Mathematics paper focuses on arithmetic fluency and mathematical problem solving.
That means children need both secure number skills and the ability to apply them to unfamiliar questions.
One of the biggest mistakes parents make is assuming every 11+ exam is the same.
The CSSE 11+ focuses on English and Mathematics, and from 2025 entry onward, the English paper does not include Applied Reasoning questions.
At home, the most useful preparation is usually the simplest: read regularly, practise spelling and grammar activities, build arithmetic fluency and tackle maths problems thoughtfully.
Preparation works best when it matches the real exam.
