Our children enjoyed another wonderful visit to Elmside Care Home this week.
As we walked through the local area, the children confidently remembered the route and excitedly pointed out familiar shops and landmarks. They made meaningful connections to their own experiences, sharing stories about places they visit with their families and discussing what they know about their community.

Building relationships across generations is such an important part of our curriculum. These visits provide valuable opportunities for children and residents alike to connect, learn from one another, and develop a sense of belonging within the wider community. Intergenerational experiences help children build confidence, communication skills, empathy and respect, while bringing joy and companionship to the residents.

Spending time outdoors and exploring our local area links closely to two key pillars of our curriculum: World and Communities and Connections and Possibilities. Through exploring their local environment, children develop an understanding of the people, places and communities around them. They also make connections between their own experiences and those of others, while discovering the many possibilities that exist beyond the nursery gates.

These meaningful experiences help children to see themselves as valued members of a wider community and encourage curiosity, confidence and a sense of belonging.

We are already looking forward to our next visit

Our children at Millennium First Steps Nursery had a wonderful visit to Elmside Care Home in Hitchin today ๐Ÿ’›

Spending time with the residents gave the children the opportunity to build confidence, develop social skills and form meaningful connections across generations. Interactions like these are so valuable for both the children and the elderly residents, bringing joy, conversation and shared experiences to everyone involved.

These visits form an important part of our curriculum, supporting childrenโ€™s understanding of the world and communities around them, while encouraging kindness, empathy and communication skills.
