Theatretrain provides Professional Training in the Performing Arts for young people aged 4 - 18. Working as a team our weekly drama, dance and singing classes are fun, build confidence and develop the imagination. As the company that loves to perform we provide many opportunities for ALL our pupils to perform in our local, regional and West End shows. Our classes of acting, singing and dancing ar

e taught in age groups 6-9, 9-12 and 13-18. Our curriculum provides a step by step understanding of the performing arts and previous experience isn't necessary. We have high expectations of our pupils and we ask for energy, enthusiasm and commitment in the work. Our teachers are experienced professionals chosen for their experience and enthusiasm.

One of the things I love most about reviews like this is that they talk about the journey.

When children first join us, parents are often wondering how they'll settle.

Will they make friends?
Will they enjoy it?
Will they grow in confidence?

The answer doesn't usually happen overnight.
It happens week by week.

Then one day you look back and realise just how far they've come.

One thing I love about rehearsals is that things don't always go to plan.

A song changes.
A child is away.
Someone has to learn a different position.
A routine gets tweaked.

At first, that can feel frustrating.
Then something lovely happens.
The children simply adapt.
They help each other.
They work out a new way of doing things.
They give it another go.

I think adaptability is one of those life skills that's easy to overlook, but it's something children practise every week without even realising it.

Why do we charge for Theatretrain tasters?

It's a question parents occasionally ask, and it's a fair one.

But over the years, I've realised most parents aren't really asking about the cost.

What they're actually trying to work out is:

"Is this right for my child?"

Will they settle?

Will they enjoy it?

Will they feel comfortable here?

The reason our tasters are run as full Theatretrain sessions is because those questions are difficult to answer in a quick trial.

One thing I've noticed is that children often show you far more over the course of a real morning than they do in the first ten minutes.

One conversation I've had more times than I can count goes something like this...

"𝗪𝗲'𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀."

So I ask,

"What's stopped you?"

The answer is often...

"We just weren't sure if now was the right time."

I completely understand.

Choosing a new activity for your child feels like a big decision.

You wonder if they'll enjoy it.
If they'll make friends.
If they'll settle.
If they'll still be going in six months' time.

The funny thing is...
I've never had a parent tell me they regretted giving their child the opportunity to try something new.

Sometimes it turns out it's not the right fit.
And that's absolutely okay.

But sometimes...

It's the place where they discover a new passion.
Where they make friends.
Where they grow in confidence.

And it all started because someone decided to give a taster session a chance.

𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄...

In two weeks' time, our halls will be full again.

The music will be on.
Teachers will be catching up after the summer.
New children will be taking those first brave steps through the door.
And familiar faces will be running in with huge smiles, ready for another term.
I can't wait.

There's always something special about the start of a new term.

New friendships, new routines, new challenges and lots of little moments that, before long, become big achievements.

If you've been thinking about booking your child a taster, now's a great time. Everyone is settling into the new term together, which makes it the perfect opportunity to join us.

Sometimes the breakthrough isn't for the children...

It's for the teacher.

This happened while I was teaching our 6–9-year-olds All Star.

The song has a soloist at the beginning of the chorus, and the choir comes in a few beats later.

Simple enough... or so I thought!

Week after week, no matter how many times we practised it, the children always came in at the same time as the soloist.

We tried it again.
And again.
And again.

Then I had a thought.

Instead of just counting them in, I pointed to myself when the soloist should sing, then pointed to the children when it was their turn.

Suddenly...
They got it.
The timing was perfect.
The song came together.

And as soon as we'd finished, the whole room erupted into cheers because they knew they'd cracked it.

It reminded me that learning doesn't always happen because we keep trying the same thing.

Sometimes it happens because someone finds a different way to explain it.

Whether it's singing, maths, reading or riding a bike, there are moments when something that felt impossible suddenly clicks.

So if your child is finding something difficult at the moment...

Don't give up.

Sometimes the breakthrough is only one different approach away.

What I love about drama is that there isn't always a right answer.

Give a group of children a character or a situation and they'll come up with ideas I'd never have thought of.

Some are funny.
Some are completely unexpected.
Some make the whole room stop and think.

I think children are naturally creative. They just need a place where they feel confident enough to share their ideas.

That's what love most about Theatretrain.
Nobody is worried about having the "perfect" answer.

Children are encouraged to explore, experiment and ask, "What if...?"

And sometimes those little moments of imagination become much bigger than the scene itself.

They help children find their voice.
Not just on stage, but in everyday life too.

Four years.

When parents first book a taster, they're usually thinking about the next Saturday.
Will my child enjoy it?
Will they settle?
Will they make friends?

Very few are thinking about where their child might be four years later.

Reviews like this remind me that confidence, creativity and performance skills don't develop overnight. They grow little by little, week after week, through lots of small moments that build up over time.

Seeing children become more confident, more expressive and more comfortable in themselves is one of the greatest privileges of what we do.

People often ask if I ever switch off from Theatretrain.

The honest answer is...
I find it quite hard.

When you work from home and run a business you genuinely love, it's very easy to keep thinking,

"I'll just answer one more email..."

"I'll just finish this one job..."

There always seems to be something else that could be done.

But over the years I've realised something.

The school holidays are important for children.....and they're important for families too.

So during the holidays, I try really hard to do something I don't always find easy.

I try to put Theatretrain down for a little while.

Because these few weeks are my chance to make memories with my family before the school routine starts all over again.

The funny thing is, I usually come back in September with fresh ideas, lots of energy and even more excitement for the new term.

So if you've sent me a message over the summer and it's taken a little longer than usual to reply...

I'm probably making the most of some family time.

And I hope you're getting the chance to do exactly the same.

What happens after a child has been at Theatretrain for a few weeks?

Most parents start by wondering how their child will feel walking through the door.

Will they settle?

Will they join in?

Will they enjoy it?

A few weeks later, they're often talking about something completely different.

Their child mentioning a new friend's name at dinner.

Putting their hand up at school.

Singing songs from class in the car.

Asking how many sleeps there are until Saturday.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that the changes parents notice aren't always the ones they expected.
