Seeing children grow in confidence is always the biggest win, and Betsy’s journey has been such a joy to be part of. She worked so hard across both English and maths, and it’s been wonderful to see her believe in herself and enjoy learning again.

She not only passed all of her SATs but also went on to win the Most Improved in Maths award. Her progress has been incredible, and I’m so proud of everything she has achieved.

Phase 4 isn’t random. It’s the next mapped step for children who have just finished Reception.
It’s also the reason this month’s Early Learner Box focuses on Phase 4, supporting children as they begin reading longer words and applying everything they’ve learned this year.

As a phonics consultant and trainer, I build everything around the same progression children follow in school. Phase 4 is the point where confidence grows, blending becomes smoother, fluency strengthens, and children start to feel more secure with reading.
