I usually get my stress out at the gym. Because apparently hitting people isn't socially acceptable. 🤫

So instead, I lift heavy things.

Work stressing you out?
🏋🏻‍♀️ Lift.

Life stressing you out?
🏋🏻‍♀️ Lift.

Someone annoying you?
🏋🏻‍♀️ Lift heavier.

Hormones making you question every life decision you've ever made? Definitely lift. 🏋🏻‍♀️

There’s something very satisfying about taking all that stress, worry, annoyance, overthinking - putting your headphones in & repeatedly picking up something heavy until your brain finally goes quiet.

Counting every rep & mindfully focusing on your body's movement, gives your brain something else to focus on.

And, while it's focussing on keeping you alive during your gym session, guess what? it doesn’t have time to:

🥧 create 21 possible scenarios of what might happen if you pie your boss in the face & quit your job

📲 send that harshly worded WhatsApp message that you know you'll regret later

🎭 convince yourself that you are going mad, because your hormones are fluctuating faster than the lines on a lie detector.

So, whether you opt for a strength session, a run, or getting in to the rhythm of a long cycle session - allow your brain this time to slow & quieten down.

And, you never know, at the end of the session, you might be quite a pleasant person - really.

Let's chew the fat - as things are about to get a little nuts 🥜

I know, I know - bad joke 🙄

There’s a lot of confusion around dietary fat.

Some people still think:

Fat makes you fat.

Others have discovered avocado, olive oil & seeds & decided:

Excellent. I shall now eat all the fat.

Neither is quite right. Your body needs dietary fat. It plays an important role in brain health, hormones, heart health & helping your body absorb vitamins A, D, E & K.

And especially during perimenopause, menopause & beyond, getting enough healthy fats as part of a balanced diet is important.

But… all fats are not created equal & as with many food groups - knowledge is key.

🥑 Unsaturated fats

These are the fats we want to include regularly:

🥑 Avocado
🫒 Olive oil
🐟 Salmon, sardines & mackerel
🥜 Nuts & seeds
🌰 Nut butters

They're nutrient-dense & can be a really useful part of a healthy diet.

BUT…

And this is where it can get confusing.

Healthy fats are still high in calories.

Fat contains 9 calories per gram, so portions matter - particularly if you're trying to lose or maintain weight & have a calorie goal.

A small handful of unsalted mixed nuts? Lovely.

Half the packet while watching Netflix because they're healthy?

Half a 200g bag is the equivalent of 600 calories (that's a meal in itself).

And olive oil…

A drizzle is perfectly reasonable.

Half the bottle because it's Mediterranean?

Your salad is now worth more calories than the actual meal.

So, what about saturated fat?

This is found in foods such as butter, fatty & processed meats, cakes, biscuits, pastries & some high-fat dairy products.

You don't need to ban these foods.

You don't need to feel guilty for eating them.

And you definitely don't need to throw grandma's vintage butter dish out of the window or never cook an Italian dish like a your moma used to make - ever again.

It's about balance, variety & moderation.

Still confused?

Eat more often:

🥑 Unsaturated fats
🐟 Oily fish
🌱 Nuts & seeds
🫒 Olive oil

Eat in moderation:

🧈 Foods higher in saturated fat
🍰 Cakes & pastries
🥓 Processed & fatty meats

And remember…

Healthy doesn't mean eat unlimited amounts.

🥑 Avocado is healthy.

🥜 Nuts are healthy.

🫒 Olive oil is healthy.

But if you're trying to manage your weight, the calories still count.

So don't fear fat.

Don't cut it out.

Just learn how to use it.

You’re there for everyone.

Your partner.
Your kids.
Your family.
Your work colleagues.
Your friends.

And somewhere along the way, you got put at the bottom of your own list.

But putting yourself first sometimes isn’t selfish.

Your energy, mental health & peace of mind matter too.

Booking the gym session.
Taking the time to exercise.
Switching off your phone.
Reading a book.
Being creative.
Eating properly.
Getting enough rest.
Saying no when something doesn’t work for you.

Stop waiting for permission to make yourself a priority. Do something this week - just for you 🧘🏻‍♀️

"I never knew a cucumber was a carbohydrate." 🥒

As a Personal Trainer, believe me when I say, I've heard it all.

If you've ever been told that carbohydrates are making you fat, that you shouldn't eat them after 6pm, or that you need to cut them out to lose weight…

Let's clear a few things up.

❌️ MYTH: Carbs make you fat.

✅️ FACT: Eating more calories than your body needs over time can lead to weight gain. Carbohydrates themselves aren't the problem.

❌️ MYTH: You don't need carbs.

✅️ FACT: Carbohydrates are an important source of energy - particularly if you're exercising & strength training. Your brain also relies heavily on glucose from carbs for fuel.

❌️ MYTH: All carbs are bad.

✅️ FACT: Not all carbohydrates are created equal.

There is a BIG difference between getting your carbohydrates from oats, potatoes, fruit, wholegrains, beans & vegetables… & getting most of them from biscuits, cakes, sweets & sugary drinks.

That doesn't mean you can never eat cake. 🥳

It means your everyday diet should be built around foods that give your body plenty of fibre, vitamins, minerals & other nutrients.

So what are the better carbohydrate choices (unrefined or unprocessed)?

🥔 Potatoes & sweet potatoes
🌾 Oats
🍞 Wholegrain bread
🍚 Wholegrain rice
🍝 Wholegrain pasta
🫘 Beans & lentils
🍎 Fruit
🥦 Vegetables

The food is close to its natural form & generally retains its fibre & nutrients.

And the less nutritious (refined or processed) options?

🍪 Biscuits
🥖 White bread
🍚 White rice
🥣 Breakfast cereals (but not all)
🍰 Cakes
🍩 Doughnuts
🥤 Sugary drinks
🍬 Sweets
🥐 Pastries

With white bread, rice & pasta - grain has been processed to remove parts such as the bran & germ, which removes much of the fibre & some nutrients.

Pastries, cakes, biscuits, sweets are also often made from refined carbohydrates & may contain significant amounts of added sugar, fat &/or salt.

They're not "bad" foods. They're just less nutrient-dense & usually much easier to overeat.

And here's something I really want women in midlife to stop doing…

Cutting out carbohydrates because you're trying to lose weight.

You can lose body fat, get stronger, support your training & eat 'unrefined' carbohydrates.

It's about the quality, quantity & overall balance of your diet - not declaring war on bread. Finding a balance between protein, unrefined carbohydrates & healthy fats is key.

You just need to know which ones are helping you fuel your body & which ones are better enjoyed occasionally.

Drop a 👍🏻 if you've found this helpful.

Penny & I were having a conversation recently & we were talking about her strength. Penny turned to me & said:

"Well, I really don't know where it came from."

I can tell you exactly where it came from - 18 months of consistency, never missing a PT session, a little physio work on the knees - hiking, strength training, golfing & since January this year a stronger focus on healthier eating, high protein & being conscious of calories.

Now weighing in at 25kg less than when she started, Penny has lost almost 30% of her bodyweight. 🏆

Equally impressive is that Penny can now Leg Press almost 4x her current bodyweight. 🏋🏻‍♀️

Well done Penny. 👏🏻 You meet every challenge head on & then go a bit further or heavier still.

This month Chrisy reached her goal weight, dropping an incredible 6.5kg & 6¼ inches - & this is just over the 16 weeks that she has been following a calorie deficit & high protein plan.

Chrisy is one of the most modest & humble individuals I've ever met.

In fact I'd go as far as to say she is unassuming. Self belief & confidence - well I'm not sure Chrisy has ever been comfortable with either of these.

When I asked her why she didn't believe her strength, inch & weight loss success.

Her reply:

"I don't know. I just think other people deserve it more than I do."

Chrisy really is her own biggest critic.

But today, when I sent her the progress photos, Chrisy pointed out herself that her arms have more tone & her lower tummy is flatter.

Chrisy also acknowledgd the huge difference compared to when she started this journey in November 2025 & she even paid herself a compliment.

Could this be self confidence coming through?

All I know is that Chrisy has completely transformed physically & mentally since we first met.

Today, she carries herself differently, she stands & walks tall even at a petite 5ft 1...😉 she has found her smile & lights up whatever space she's in.

Chrisy, you deserve this success 🙌🏻 you have & continue to work so hard at your journey in & outside of the gym. You take every piece of advice & apply it - you're determined, consistent & now you can see the results. Well done 👏🏻

Hayleigh is back! 🔥

Hayleigh started her journey with me in the Spring. She had already begun her weight loss journey & was down 34kg.

Determined to lose more weight, build strength & be in a position to book excess skin removal surgery in early 2027, Hayleigh enlisted my help.

However, neither of us could have predicted what happened next.

We had to press the pause button.

Hayleigh was involved in a car crash, which left her unable to train.

Then a date for her eye surgery came through. Hayleigh has diabetic retinopathy & sight loss. Again, it was important she took adequate rest & avoid any exercise that could place pressure on her head & eyes whilst recovering. And if that wasn't enough - she developed complications with her bladder.

And yet, with all this happening, Hayleigh kept her goal in sight, she trained lightly when she felt able & slowly built up her fitness with fun pump classes & even a bunji fit class. And most impressively dropped a further 7kg.

In her own words she said to me today, 'I like fun exercise'.

Skin removal surgery now booked for February 2027, she returned to the gym for her first PT session since we paused & she absolutely smashed it.

Hayleigh has also signed up to walk 100 miles this month, for Cancer Research - she is feeling quite confident with this one as she is a registered dog walker, so certainly gets the miles in most days.

It's amazing to have you back Hayleigh 💜

Getting older doesn't mean your body has to become a collection of random noises, creaks & complaints.

You know the ones…

“That was my knee!"

“I'm just a bit stiff.”

“I’ve slept funny.”

And the classic…

“I’m fine once I get going.”

Getting older is inevitable.

Getting weaker, stiffer & less mobile isn't.

Here's the UK stats:

60% of adult women don't do muscle-strengthening exercise twice a week. The minimum recommendation for women aged 19-64.

45% of women don't feel fit enough for the gym.

38% of women aged 45-54 in England don't achieve the recommended 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.

Almost 1 in 3 women reduce or stop physical activity during menopause.

Regular strength training & movement can help you maintain muscle, build strength, support your bones, improve mobility, balance & confidence as you age.

The stronger you are going into midlife, the more you've got in the bank to work with.

It means your body is better prepared for the things you actually want to do - rather than treating getting out of a chair like an Olympic event or going upstairs like your climbing Macha Picchu.

And let's be honest, who wants to find themselves in older age saying, "I could do that once upon a time" or "my knees don't work like they used to".

So don't wait until your back starts going out more than you do.

Train it.
Move it.
Strengthen it.
Look after it.

Because getting older is a privilege.

Being unable to get off the sofa without a three-point turn isn't.
