The Kent Test isn't just about working through practice papers.

Knowing what to teach, when to teach it and how to build the skills children need throughout Year 5 makes a huge difference.

I’m Becky Corden, West Kent Tutor, a qualified primary school teacher with 24 years of teaching experience, and I specialise in Kent Test preparation.

I currently have a few spaces available in my Year 5 small-group tuition:

📚 Wednesday | 5.45–7.00pm
📚 Thursday | 5.45–7.00pm
💻 Live tuition on Zoom
👧👦 Maximum 5–6 children per group
💷 £28 per week

I don't believe in simply giving children endless practice papers.

My Year 5 programme is carefully structured to build the English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning skills needed for the Kent Test, while giving children time to develop their confidence and independence.

And because my groups are small, I get to know each child really well — where they're strong, where they need support and how best to help them progress.

Did you know that I offer a fully funded 11+ tuition bursary?

Each year, I set aside a place within one of my Year 5 groups for a child whose family would genuinely be unable to afford private 11+ tuition.

The bursary includes six terms of weekly online group tuition, weekly homework and resources, and two mock exams — completely free of charge.

The aim is simply to give a child the opportunity to access high-quality 11+ preparation that they might otherwise not be able to have.

The place is offered to a child who would benefit from the level and pace of the group. I would be very happy to carry out a free baseline assessment to help determine suitability.

I also ask that the child is able to attend regularly, engage with the sessions and make a reasonable effort with the weekly work.

I don't want families to feel that they need to publicly share their financial circumstances. If you know of a family who you think may benefit, please feel free to contact me privately and I can explain how the bursary works.

I am particularly keen for schools and professionals who work with local families to be aware that this opportunity exists.

I have just ONE space available in each of these small-group classes:

⏰ 5.45pm – 7.00pm
📅 Starts Wednesday 23rd September 2026

⭐ Term 1 runs for 5 weeks, with the group continuing for 6 terms across the academic year.

☀️ There will also be optional weekly summer tuition groups during summer 2027 to help children maintain their skills and prepare for the final stages of their Kent Test preparation.

The small groups have a maximum of 5/6 children, allowing plenty of individual support while developing the English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning skills needed for the Kent Test.

🚨 **WHAT DOES YOUR CHILD ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW FOR THE KENT TEST?** 🚨

Here’s something I wish more parents knew…

**THE KENT TEST DOES NOT TEST THE YEAR 6 MATHS CURRICULUM.** ❌

You do **NOT** need to teach your child every topic they will encounter in Year 6 just because they are preparing for the Kent Test.

In particular, there is no need to spend valuable preparation time teaching:

❌ Algebra
❌ BODMAS/BIDMAS
❌ Probability
❌ Ratio
❌ Scale factors
❌ Parts of a circle
❌ Converting between metric and imperial measurements
❌ Mean, median, mode and range
❌ Long division

These are **Year 6 maths topics and are not part of the Kent Test maths curriculum.**

Occasionally, a question may use a context that looks like one of these areas, but if it can be answered using knowledge already covered in the relevant curriculum, that does **not** mean the child needs to have been taught the Year 6 topic.

🎯 **This is why targeted Kent Test preparation matters.**

There are so many 11+ books, websites and resources out there that include material far beyond what children actually need for the Kent Test.

More difficult ≠ better preparation.

Children are far better served by becoming **really secure in the skills that ARE tested**, developing their reasoning and problem-solving skills, and becoming confident with the types of questions they are likely to face.

At West Kent Tutor, I don't believe in teaching children things simply because they're labelled "11+".

I focus on **what they actually need for the Kent Test.**

❤️ **Don't teach EVERYTHING.
Teach the RIGHT things really well.**
