Every overtake is a calculation of speed, space, and risk. Pulling out close to another vehicle requires total focus and a split-second judgment of the gap. It is a high-stakes balance of timing and confidence behind the wheel.

🚨 POLICE DRIVERS — HIGHER TRAINING SHOULD MEAN HIGHER STANDARDS.

As a Driving Instructor and Advanced Driver, I take road safety extremely seriously.

Managing risk is one of the most important skills any driver can develop.

It's not simply about following the rules; it's about recognising hazards, anticipating what might happen next and making decisions that reduce risk to yourself and others.

🚔 Police drivers are supposed to demonstrate standards BETTER than the average driver — not equal to, and certainly not worse than, those standards.

With additional training and responsibility should come greater awareness, better judgement and a commitment to setting an example for other road users.

Being a better driver isn't about what you claim to be capable of.

It's about the standards you consistently demonstrate on the road.

💭 Advanced driving isn't about showing what you can get away with. It's about demonstrating how effectively you can manage risk.

🚗 “YOU ONLY REALLY LEARN TO DRIVE AFTER YOU'VE PASSED YOUR TEST.”

REALLY? 🤔

We've all heard it. But is it true?

Well, YES… and NO!

If you only start learning AFTER passing your test, what exactly were you doing BEFORE it?

The DVSA driving test assesses whether you can drive safely and independently to the required standard.

It doesn't make you an expert or give you years of experience.

But you SHOULD already be a safe, competent driver before passing.

🚦 WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU PASS?

You gain experience.

Different roads, traffic, weather and situations you've never encountered before.

And yes, you'll make mistakes.

WE ALL DO!

What matters is what you learn from them.

🧠 THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK AFTER EVERY JOURNEY:

✅ WHAT DID I DO WELL?
What worked? What hazards did I anticipate?

🤔 WHAT COULD I HAVE DONE BETTER?
Did I spot something late? Follow too closely? Fail to plan ahead?

🔄 WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME?
What can I learn and apply next time?

⚠️ HERE'S THE CHALLENGE…

STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE!

Instead of thinking:

“That idiot pulled out on me!”

Ask:

“Could I have spotted that earlier?”

“Could I have anticipated their actions?”

“Could I have reduced the risk?”

That doesn't mean accepting blame for someone else's mistakes.

It means taking responsibility for YOUR driving.

🚗 WANT TO BECOME A BETTER DRIVER?

You don't necessarily need more lessons.

Further training, confidence coaching or advanced driving tuition can help, but you can start improving TODAY.

Reflect on your journeys. Question your decisions. Recognise mistakes and celebrate what went well.

That attitude could make you a better driver than someone with decades of experience who believes they've nothing left to learn.

Bright at the front. Invisible at the back. 🚗

Your daytime running lights make you easy to see coming towards someone.

They do nothing for the driver behind you.

Most cars have no DRLs at the rear. Your dashboard is lit, the front looks great, and the back of your car is a dark shape on a dark road.

Dipped headlights switch your rear lights on. That's the whole point of them.

👉 Two-second check this week: engine running, lights where you normally leave them, walk round the back and look. Most people are surprised by what they see.

Clocks go back next Sunday. Turn them on — don't trust them on.

Always arriving. Safe driving for life.

🚗 YOUR DRIVING THIS WEEK — WHAT WENT WELL, AND WHAT COULD HAVE GONE BETTER?

Whether you're learning to drive, have just passed your test, have been driving for 30 years, or are working towards an advanced driving qualification with IAM RoadSmart, RoSPA or Diamond, there's something we can all benefit from.

REFLECTION.

✅ What went well with your driving this week?

🤔 What didn't go quite as well?

🚦 Did you encounter a difficult or potentially dangerous situation?

Here's the challenge.

Even if somebody else made the mistake, could YOU have done something differently?

Could you have anticipated the situation earlier?

Did you contribute to it in some way?

And if you encountered the same situation tomorrow, what would you do differently?

🎉 PASSED YOUR DRIVING TEST THIS WEEK?

Congratulations! What's next?

Buying your first car? Building confidence? Gaining independent driving experience? Perhaps some additional training?

Passing your test is a fantastic achievement, but it's also the beginning of your next driving journey.

The Tewkesbury Cross roundabout is a notorious spot for learner drivers failing their tests, often because they’re forced into unnecessary errors by "experienced" drivers behaving badly. 🚗⚠️🚦

If you are in the wrong lane go the wrong way and find a safe place to turn around.

Learners make sure you know the speed and position of those around you you'd fail but they may have triggered the event but they cannot take the blame the responsibility is yours alone.

if you drive defensively this won't happen when your there. If the van adopts a consistent defensive driving style they won't put them alongside the car that doesn't position well or maintain well.

Both could do better this was quite close, the van driver did well to reqct quick and stop it becoming a collision but unfortunately they aren't likely to learn from the near miss and reflect on how they could have done better and not been in that vulnerable position and I suspect the car had no idea that it even happened.

DO NOT rely on other people to keep you safe on the road.

When driving in the rain, tailgating a truck means you’re blinded by spray and invisible to the driver. Always leave at least a four-second gap—that’s roughly 108 metres or 27 car lengths—to stay safe on the road. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ 🌧️🚗⚠️

IT'S NOT YOUR ROAD. IT'S A SHARED ROAD.

When you're driving, are you really paying attention to EVERYONE sharing the road with you?

🚴 BOB = BLOKE ON A BIKE

B – Bloke
O – On
B – Bike

BOB is riding a pedal cycle.

He might need to move around potholes, drains or other hazards, so don't assume he'll always travel in a straight line.

The Highway Code advises leaving at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds up to 30 mph.

Travelling faster? GIVE MORE SPACE.

🏍️ TOM = TEENAGER ON A MOTORBIKE

T – Teenager
O – On
M – Motorbike

TOM might only have completed his CBT and could still be developing his riding skills, awareness and experience.

Give TOM time, space and consideration. Anticipate what he MIGHT do, not just what you expect him to do.

⚡ AND THEIR QUIETER FRIENDS…

Electric bikes and electric scooters.

They can be surprisingly quick and difficult to hear approaching.

Don't rely on hearing them. LOOK PROPERLY.

🐎 DON'T FORGET HORSES!

Slow down to under 10 mph and leave at least 2 metres of space when passing.

Be patient. Horses can react unpredictably.

🚗 BUT THIS ISN'T JUST ABOUT VULNERABLE ROAD USERS!

It's about EVERYONE.

Cars, vans, lorries, buses, motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders and anyone else using our roads.

Some are experienced. Some are learning. Some are confident. Some are nervous. Some will make mistakes.

And occasionally, that person making the mistake will be YOU.

THE LESSON?

BOB needs SPACE.
TOM needs TIME.
ELECTRIC RIDERS need your ATTENTION.
HORSES need PATIENCE.

EVERY ROAD USER DESERVES CONSIDERATION AND RESPECT.

Good driving isn't simply about knowing who has priority or who is technically in the right.

It's about awareness, anticipation, cooperation and taking responsibility for your own actions.

You cannot control what everyone else does.

But you CAN control how you respond.

🚦 IT'S NOT YOUR ROAD.
🤝 IT'S A SHARED ROAD.
