Our Years 5–8 Continuity Work Group brings primary and secondary colleagues together to explore how curriculum, teaching, representations and mathematical language can connect across KS2 and KS3.

📚 Securing Foundations at Year 7: Supporting Students to Succeed in Secondary Maths

Every Year 7 classroom includes students who arrive with significant gaps in their mathematical understanding. Without targeted support, these gaps can quickly become barriers to success across the KS3 curriculum.

The Securing Foundations at Year 7 programme has been designed specifically for teachers working with students who did not meet age-related expectations at the end of primary school, particularly those in the lowest 20–30% nationally.

Whether you're new to the classroom or an experienced teacher, this fully funded programme is designed to help you close the gap and build confidence in learners transitioning from KS2 to KS3.

What’s involved?

Join us for three practical and collaborative sessions where you will:

✅ Access high-quality resources designed specifically for students with gaps in their KS2 understanding.
✅ Strengthen your knowledge of curriculum progression from KS1 through to KS3.
✅ Develop effective strategies to help students access and succeed with the KS3 maths curriculum.
✅ Explore research-informed approaches to mathematical reasoning for all learners.
✅ Connect with colleagues through a supportive professional learning community.

What will you gain?

By the end of the programme, you will:

📐 Ready to strengthen maths teaching across your school?

Join our Teaching for Mastery Work Group and connect with colleagues to explore research, share practice and develop a shared understanding of effective mathematics teaching.

This programme is designed for schools ready to develop Teaching for Mastery and who are committed to engaging in sustained professional learning.

Headteacher engagement is an important aspect of the programme, particularly during school visits and Work Group sessions, helping to support participation and the development of a whole-school approach.

Each school will nominate:

☑️ A Maths Lead
☑️ An additional participant who can contribute to and support the school’s professional learning journey

Lead participants will:

👉️ Attend six half-termly Work Group sessions each year for two years, facilitated by a Mastery Specialist.
👉️ Participate in collaborative professional learning with colleagues from across the Maths Hub community.
👉️ Receive support through three half-day school visits each year for two years.
👉️ Engage with research, guidance materials and reflective professional discussions that support the development of Teaching for Mastery.

📐 UNDERSTANDING Teaching for Mastery

Build confidence, deepen your understanding and strengthen your secondary maths practice through our collaborative Work Group.

This collaborative Work Group is ideal for teachers who are new to Teaching for Mastery, or for those who would like to deepen and refine their classroom practice.

Across the programme, you will explore the key principles that underpin Teaching for Mastery and develop a deeper understanding of the Five Big Ideas. Working alongside colleagues from other schools, you will have the opportunity to discuss effective practice, share experiences and reflect on your teaching.

Between sessions, participants will be encouraged to trial new approaches in their classrooms and evaluate their impact on pupils’ learning. This cycle of collaborative planning, classroom practice and professional reflection will help you build confidence and embed Teaching for Mastery approaches into your everyday teaching.

By the end of the programme, you will have:

🌟 Developed a secure understanding of the principles of Teaching for Mastery.
🌟 Increased your confidence in applying the Five Big Ideas in your classroom.
🌟 Explored practical strategies to promote mathematical thinking, reasoning and fluency.
🌟 Worked collaboratively with colleagues to share ideas, overcome challenges and improve outcomes for pupils.
🌟 Reflected on your own practice and identified next steps in your professional development.

Whether you are just beginning your Teaching for Mastery journey or looking to strengthen your existing practice, this Work Group provides an excellent opportunity to learn alongside like-minded colleagues and make a lasting impact on pupils’ mathematical understanding.

This Work Group will run across three sessions and is available to teachers from schools that have a Teaching for Mastery Specialist or who have previously taken part on the Teaching for Mastery Development or Embedding Programme. Please get in touch if you need further information.
