Welcome To Hexham Priory School

Hexham Priory School is a community, special school in Hexham, West Northumberland, for pupils aged 2-19 years old who experience severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. We hope that you find our website informative and easy to navigate, it is designed to give you an insight into the outstanding quality of education and support that we strive to del

iver. If you would like further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us or better still arrange to come and visit the School. We are blessed with a committed and skilled staff team who work hard with parents, carers and others to ensure every child’s education is matched to their individual needs. A team of professionals based in the school enable children to gain the best possible access to their education. Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Nurses all work with Teachers and Teaching Assistants to meet every child’s individual needs. Relationships between staff and children are the key to the positive ethos of the school, making school a happy and purposeful place where children are respected, praised and acknowledged for who they are as well as what they do. The School motto of ‘Never underestimate a child’s ability’ is central to our philosophy and purpose. We enjoy excellent relationships with many local mainstream schools and pupils from our School regularly spend time with mainstream peers. We understand how crucial families are to the development of their child and we engage with our pupils’ parents and siblings in a number of ways, many of which you will be able to read more about elsewhere in this website. Whilst we are delighted that Ofsted have recognised our work to be “Outstanding” in all aspects at each of our two most recent inspections, we are relentless in our drive to further develop these standards. Visitors regularly comment on the friendly, welcoming atmosphere and purposeful environment at school and you would be most welcome to arrange to come and see school for yourself.

Results day can feel like a defining moment for young people, particularly when expectations are high or outcomes do not match what they had hoped for.

Our latest guide supports parents, carers and educators in helping young people approach results day with perspective, reassurance and confidence.

The guide explores:
• Setting the tone early and reducing pressure before the day
• Normalising different outcomes and preparing for next steps
• Staying calm, present and supportive when results arrive
• Exploring options and alternative pathways together
• Encouraging reflection without rumination
• Celebrating strengths, qualities and achievements beyond grades

With clear, practical advice, this resource helps adults support young people before, during and after results day, whatever their outcomes.

Spending time outdoors can play an important role in children’s wellbeing, learning, confidence and development.

However, busy routines, safety concerns and limited access to outdoor space can make it harder for families, schools and carers to prioritise time in nature.

Our latest guide shares simple, practical ideas to help children reconnect with the natural world, including:
• Noticing wildlife during everyday routines
• Taking familiar activities outside
• Creating mini adventures
• Growing plants or building nature at home
• Using technology to identify birdsong, insects and wildlife
• Supporting older children with independence and sensible risk-taking

With realistic ideas for all ages, the guide helps make outdoor time feel accessible, enjoyable and worthwhile.
