Functional Skills qualifications are practical, work-focused alternatives to GCSEs in English, mathematics, and digital skills designed to test real-world application.

Key Levels and Equivalencies
Level 2: Roughly equal to a standard GCSE grade 4 or grade C, widely accepted by employers and universities.
Level 1: Roughly equal to GCSE grades 1 to 3 (grades D to G).
Entry Level (1–3): Focuses on absolute basics for absolute beginners or early skill builders.

Core Subjects
English: Covers reading comprehension, writing accuracy, and speaking, listening, and communication.
Maths: Focuses on practical problem-solving, calculations, data handling, and common measures instead of memorizing complex formulas.
Digital Skills: Teaches safe and effective use of devices, software, and online tools.

Why People Choose Them
Speed: Can often be completed in weeks or months rather than years.
Apprenticeships: Frequently required or accepted for standard apprenticeship programs.
Flexibility: Offered through institutions like City & Guilds and Pearson Edexcel with on-demand testing options. Exams can be taken in person or online.
