I have attached the Herne Bay Family Hub half term flyer which provides information about what is running over the half term week. They have baby groups, child health clinics and spooky craft.
They have two spooky craft events on 26th and 27th October, these are run by KAE. families can book onto these free fun sessions.

🌿 A Special Visit from a Former Preschooler! 🌿

This week, we were delighted to welcome back former preschooler Gina, who is now a Scout Leader in Herne Bay.

As part of her Scouting of the World Award (SOWA), Gina is completing an environmental community project linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The award focuses on making a positive and sustainable contribution to the community.

Gina spent the week with us, transforming our dull old tyres with colourful paint and working alongside the children and staff to give them a new lease of life. 🎨♻️

With paint kindly donated by Maya’s Community Centre in Herne Bay, as well as her family’s donation of sand, shingle, soil and seeds. Gina led the tyre activities and helped us to site and fill the tyres ready for planting. The children were involved too, painting the tyres, adding seeds and watering them as we began to create something new from materials we already had. 🌱💧

This project has provided lots of valuable learning opportunities for the children. They have been developing their understanding of sustainability, caring for the environment and planting seeds, while also building confidence through practical, hands-on experiences.

Working alongside Gina has encouraged teamwork, cooperation and communication, while filling, planting and watering has supported their physical and fine motor skills.

It has also been a lovely opportunity for the children to see how something old and unused can be reused and transformed, helping to develop an early understanding of recycling, reducing waste and caring for our environment. 🌍🌱

A big thank you to Gina for giving her time all week and involving the children in such a meaningful community project, and thanks again to Madri at Maya’s Community Centre for kindly donating the paint. ☺️

This week, we have observed lots of collaboration and teamwork as the children worked together in their play, shared ideas, listened to one another and built on each other’s thinking.

It has been lovely to see their confidence growing as they discover that working together can make their play even more exciting!

✏️ We’ve also been developing our fine motor skills and mark making. The children have been building shoulder, elbow and wrist strength, all important foundations and the very first steps towards developing the skills needed for future writing.

Through play and exploration, the children are developing their confidence, independence and physical skills, while learning how to work alongside and communicate with others.

We are very excited to share some lovely news from our setting!

We are now in our third year of projects as part of our Balanced System accreditation and are very proud to continue to hold our Centre of Excellence status. Our work continues to focus on supporting and improving outcomes for our children’s speech, language and communication development.

This morning we welcomed our Mentor and SEND Therapies Lead Teacher, Hester Mackay, to visit our setting and see some of the work we have been doing. It was lovely to have the opportunity to share what we have been working on and talk about how we can continue to develop our practice.

During Hester’s visit, she also shared some very exciting news with us. We are delighted to have been selected as the only setting in Kent to trial the new WellComm speech and language screening toolkit for early years, helping to explore how it can be used effectively across early years settings ahead of a possible wider rollout.

WellComm is a screening and intervention tool for the early years, and as part of the trial we will be using it as a universal tool across our setting. This means that every child will be screened, giving us a clear picture of their individual speech, language and communication skills.

The screening will help us to identify children’s strengths as well as any areas where they may need a little extra support. We can then use this information to decide what support is most appropriate, whether that is through our everyday practice, individual support or small group activities.

It will also help us to monitor children’s progress and make sure that support can be increased or reduced depending on each child’s individual needs.

As part of the trial, we will be working closely with Hester and her colleagues to give feedback on how useful WellComm is within our setting and the impact it has on the support we provide for our children.

We are really pleased to have been chosen to take part and are looking forward to getting started, learning more about the toolkit and sharing what we learn along the way.

Most importantly, this is another step in our ongoing commitment to supporting every child to develop their communication skills, find their voice and reach their full potential.

At the end of our second full week back, it has been lovely to see the children becoming more settled and confident in their surroundings. Friendships are developing, children are exploring more independently and becoming familiar with our routines. We have also enjoyed building those special bonds with our key people and key buddies, helping children feel secure, confident and ready to learn.

📦 Box play has been a real favourite this week, the children have climbed in and out, closed the lid, discovered what it feels like to be inside and enjoyed taking turns with their friends. This simple play has supported physical development, spatial awareness, confidence, communication and turn-taking, while encouraging curiosity and exploration. This supports the EYFS Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning — Playing and Exploring, Active Learning and Creating and Thinking Critically.

🐶 Thursday afternoon’s highlight was a visit from our therapy dog, Teddy! We enjoyed a story together before having time for gentle strokes and cuddles. Teddy brought lots of smiles and this lovely experience supported the EYFS areas of Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Communication and Language, as children developed confidence, kindness, listened to a story together and explored positive, gentle interactions with an animal❤️

👋 Our Makaton sign of the week was HELLO, and we also learned DOG and TEDDY. These are shared weekly, please sign along at home too. Our whole team are trained to Makaton Level 1, completed during our staff development day in September. Using signs alongside speech helps support children's communication, understanding and participation.

🌱 So much learning happens through these everyday experiences — building relationships, developing communication, growing independence and following children's curiosity through play.

We are so proud of how well everyone is settling in and look forward to another week of exploring and learning together! 💕

🌿 What a wonderful first week back at preschool! 🌿

We’ve had a lovely week settling our new children and welcoming back our returning children. It has been wonderful to see friendships rekindled, confidence growing and everyone beginning to find their way around our routines and free-flow environment. 🧡

There has been lots of exploring, discovering and learning through play, both indoors and outdoors:

🌧️ Puddle jumping – building confidence, physical skills and resilience

🪣 Mud kitchen & sand and water play – encouraging creativity, sensory exploration and imagination

🪵 Loose parts construction – developing problem-solving, teamwork and early mathematical thinking

🎨 Mark making & messy play – supporting fine motor skills, creativity and self-expression

🎭 Performing on the stage – building confidence, communication and imagination

We have been so proud to see the children showing resilience and independence as they try new things, make choices, manage challenges and learn our preschool routines.

What a fantastic start to our new term! 🌈✨ We can’t wait to see what adventures and learning next week brings!
