Aerial view of Sichelkamm, Switzerland.
The huge rock fold in the flank of the 2,269-metre-high Sichelkamm is one of the most pronounced structures of its kind in the Alps. It also bears witness to the collision of the African and Eurasian plates, which began around 100 million years ago and continues to this day. The limestone layers, which were deposited horizontally on the seabed of the primeval Tethys Ocean during the Cretaceous period around 120 million years ago, were squeezed laterally and pushed upwards.
