✈️ Maths with: Paper Aeroplanes ✈️

One of my favourite activities I've done in sessions is making and testing paper aeroplanes.

It's an excellent STEM exercise that uses a lot of maths found within GCSE level, including trigonometry, speed-distance-time, shapes and nets, and more.

The possibilities are endless, and I like this activity in particular as it is one you wouldn't often see in a classroom setting.

Finding Maths overwhelming?

Here are some tips that can help with processing, checking and managing your workload:

1️⃣ USE YOUR RESOURCES
If you're struggling to work something out, don't be afraid to use your notes or examples to remind you how to do things. Revision notes and formula sheets are super helpful too!

2️⃣ ASK FOR HELP
There's no shame at all in asking for help or advice from someone if you need it. This applies to more than just Maths too!

3️⃣ TAKE BREAKS
Working too hard for too long without proper breaks can make any situation overwhelming. Working in short bursts with small breaks in between for drinks or fresh air can be really helpful.

4️⃣ LOGIC CHECK
Unsure if your answers make sense and want a quick way to see if your answers are in the right direction? Using rough estimates for numbers to find an approximate answer can help you see if your answer is close to being correct or not.

📊DIFFERENT LEVELS OF TUITION📊

COG Tuition covers maths from a wide range of levels, including:

• Functional Skills (up to Level 2)
• GCSE (Foundation and Higher tiers)
• A-Level (& AS-Level)

Each session and programme is tailored to the needs of the student, not just in terms of curriculum, but also involving their hobbies.

In the past there have been sessions involving Minecraft, Pokémon and trading card games, as they all have maths at their core that can be explored!

Want to estimate the size of a room but don't have a suitable measuring tool? Maybe a CD can help! Pick your favourite album, game or film and find its radius (distance from centre to edge), then follow the steps!

Fun fact, this is how measuring wheels work. You can also use this to find the perimeter of a room/space.

If the room isn't a simple shape like a rectangle, try drawing it and filling in your lengths before finding the area.

Want to estimate pi (π) using things around the house? You will need:

· An object with a circular face (a tin can, a glass, a clock, etc.)
· Ruler
· String or tape measure
· Pen
· Paper
· Calculator

1️⃣. Use a ruler to measure the distance from end-to end (through the middle) of the circular face of your chosen object. Make a note. This is the 'diameter'.

2️⃣. Use string or a tape measure along the outside edge of the circular face. If using string, mark the length with a pen and use the ruler to measure the marked string when straightened out. Make a note. This is the 'circumference'.

3️⃣. Divide the circumference of the circular face by the diameter. Your answer should be close to π (3.1415926...)

How does it work?

The formula for calculating the circumference (C) of a circle is C =πD, so by dividing by the diameter (D), this gives C/D = π (≈ 3.1415926...). This works for all circles!

I'm excited to announce that I am opening up bookings for 1-to-1 tuition sessions starting from Tuesday 19th March. Here's a breakdown of how it will work:

· I offer 1-to-1 tuition for Functional Skills, GCSE and A-Level mathematics.

· I have limited availability for sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, during the daytime. Evening sessions will need to be arranged on a case-by-case basis.

· Prices for sessions are £25 for one hour or £40 for a two-hour block.
