DSWEducation

DSWEducation Having coached for ten years, Sam Dovey founded KBT Education to introduce innovative, functional training courses to sports coaches and personal trainers.

Starting out at their base in Henley-in-Arden in the West Midlands, the KBT team wrote and developed their core courses, before rolling them out across the country. Courses included strength and conditioning, kettlebells and unilateral and advanced weightlifting. Having been in the shoes of their clients for many years previously, the KBT team really understand the issues faced by many trainers an

d coaches. With this insight in mind, the team developed the courses to ensure they addressed gaps in the industry by focusing on functional training and really targeting the needs of KBT’s clients. As KBT has grown, the company has expanded to deliver courses across the United Kingdom and since 2013 the United Arab Emirates.

Being a great is more than being a great programmer. You need to be able to get involved in all aspects of your athletes training.

You should be able to improve technique; be an excellent (and adaptable) programmer, be committed to your athletes training, be a brilliant listener, and be passionate about learning.

Do you know your Kettlebell Swing from your Kettlebell Sn**ch?

Both of these exercises are equally effective in building power and developing the muscles in the upper back. But they both also have their own unique qualities and benefits.

The swing will be superior for posterior chain, core and strength development, as you can use a heavier load due to the shortened range of movement.

The sn**ch has an advantage in grip strength and demands a great range of mobility in the thoracic region.

If you want to design a training program that will give the best possible results, you must know the needs and capabilities of your athlete.⁣

When it comes to peak performance you must tailor a program knowing their strengths, weaknesses, goals and physiological make up.⁣

One way of determining muscle fibre type is to perform a max effort set at 80% of your 1 rep max. ⁣

This is an old test but probably the most simple and objective way of determining muscle fibre dominance, as muscle biopsy testing is invasive, unpractical and painful.⁣

As well as the Vertical Jump we also look at the Standing Long Jump/Broad Jump as part of performance testing on our S&C Level 3 and 4 courses.⁣

Like the Vertical jump this is a very good indication of the power output of an athlete, but this time in the horizontal plane rather than the vertical.⁣

On both our Strength & Conditioning Level 3 and Level 4 courses we study jump testing.⁣

Firstly we look at the Vertical Jump to test. This is useful for coaches to know for a number of different reasons:⁣

- Shows the vertical power output of an athlete. This can then be tested again at the end of the program to show improvements made.⁣
- Indicates muscle fibre type by examining how the athlete dips, speed of dip and turnover as well as degree of flexion at the knee.⁣
- Can be used to track fatigue during a training program.⁣
