🐴🧡 Why Horses Are So Much More Than Riding
As a riding school, we sometimes hear parents say: “It’s an expensive hobby!” 😂🐴
And yes …… horses certainly aren’t cheap! There are riding lessons, hats, boots, muddy clothes and inevitably a child who starts asking whether they can have a pony of their own. 😂💷
But when we watch children grow up around horses, we see something much bigger than simply learning how to ride.
We see horses teaching them compassion. ❤️ Children learn to care for an animal that cannot tell them in words what it needs. They begin to notice body language, emotions and the importance of kindness.
We see them learning responsibility. 🌧️☀️❄️ Horses need looking after whatever the weather and regardless of whether we feel like doing it that day.
We see them discover hard work. 💪 Mucking out, sweeping, filling haynets, grooming, poo picking and getting thoroughly covered in mud are all part of horse life!
We see them realise that appearances really don’t matter. 😂 A horse doesn’t care about designer clothes, perfect hair or the latest trainers. They care about patience, fairness, kindness and trust.
We see them learning patience. 🌿 You can’t rush a horse. Sometimes you have to stop, listen, change your approach and try again.
We see them developing resilience. 🐴 Not every lesson goes perfectly. Sometimes things don’t work. Sometimes they make mistakes. Sometimes they fall off.
But they learn to dust themselves down, reflect, try again and celebrate the little improvements along the way.
And we see confidence growing. 🩵 There’s something pretty incredible about watching a child realise they can communicate with an animal many times their own size and build a partnership based on trust rather than force.
So to the parents sitting on the side of the arena week after week …… To the ones paying for the lessons, washing the muddy clothes, buying yet another pair of boots because they’ve grown again 😂, and listening to endless conversations about horses on the journey home …… You’re giving them so much more than a riding lesson. 🤎
You’re giving them opportunities to learn responsibility, compassion, patience, resilience, confidence, kindness and respect.
Lessons that reach far beyond the riding arena and can stay with them throughout their lives. ✨
Because we might be a riding school …… But horses teach so much more than riding. 🐴❤️
