Sam Goldsworthy Childminding I am an ofsted registered childminder in Helston Cornwall. I offer childcare and education for children of all ages. Please call for any further information.

I am accredited and can provide funded nursery education for 3/4 yr olds and some 2 yr olds dependant on circumstances. I follow the Early years foundation stage curriculum and ensure that the children are hitting the developmental milestones.

Sometimes painting needs a little more space! 🖌️✨

Today we took our painting outdoors and went large scale — big brushes, big movements and a big canvas!

Large-scale painting is such a wonderful way to support:
🖌️ Gross motor movements
🎨 Creativity & self-expression
💪 Strength and coordination
👀 Spatial awareness
🌈 Exploring colour and mark making
🧠 Open-ended, child-led learning

✨ Campfire Role Play ✨

Sometimes the simplest resources spark the richest imaginations. 🍂🪵

At Forest school the children created our own campfire using logs and leaves, giving them the opportunity to explore imaginative play, storytelling and collaboration. From “cooking” woodland meals to gathering around the fire to share adventures, their creativity led the learning every step of the way.

Role play like this supports:
🔥 Imagination and creativity
🗣️ Communication and language
🤝 Turn-taking and cooperation
🌿 A connection with the natural world

There’s no need for expensive resources—nature provides everything we need for meaningful, child-led play.

🚗 Ramp Play = Big Learning! 🛣️

Today we explored ramps and cars, and what looked like simple play was full of rich learning opportunities.

As the children experimented with different heights and angles, they began making predictions, testing their ideas, and solving problems. We talked about which cars travelled the fastest, which rolled the furthest, and why changing the ramp made a difference.

Through this child-led investigation, they were developing:
✨ Early maths skills – comparing speed, distance and height
✨ Scientific thinking – exploring cause and effect
✨ Communication and language – sharing ideas and introducing new vocabulary such as steep, gentle, faster, slower, roll and gravity
✨ Critical thinking – planning, testing and adapting their ideas
✨ Physical development – carefully placing cars and building ramps

The best learning often starts with a simple invitation to play. 💚

Sounds backwards — until you've watched it happen. 👇

A child who's properly taught to use a real tool concentrates completely. A child who's never trusted with anything learns one thing only: that risk is someone else's job.

Risky play, done well, is how children learn to keep THEMSELVES safe.

🛠️ Tool School with Ryan 🛠️

This week at Tool School, Ryan introduced the children to tape measures, encouraging them to become curious investigators as they measured objects around our setting.

From tables to the tri climb as well as the dinosaurs the children explored length, size and comparison through meaningful, hands-on play. They began using mathematical language such as longer, shorter, taller, smaller, biggest and smallest while discovering that measuring has a real purpose.

Giving children opportunities to use real tools builds confidence, develops fine motor skills, encourages problem-solving and nurtures perseverance. It’s amazing how much learning can happen through a simple tape measure and a sense of curiosity.

At Tool School, we believe children learn best by doing, exploring real-life experiences and developing practical skills in a safe and supportive environment.

✨ Try this at home: Challenge your child to measure different objects around the house and compare which is the longest, shortest, tallest or widest. It’s a brilliant way to develop early maths through play.
