Sign Language Interpreting is a highly skilled and creative job, and we know it can be overwhelming to become a Registered Sign Language Interpreter.
Sign Language Interpreters require:
✅ deep cultural and linguistic understanding
✅ expert knowledge of subject matter
✅ the ability to communicate clearly
✅ and also require professional qualifications (long training, practice, and experience)
Apart from needing an excellent understanding of two (or more) languages, interpreters need to have excellent people skills and be a really good communicator.
For those just starting on the journey, be prepared; it is likely to be a long one. At a minimum, you are probably going to need at least 7 years to get to ‘fully qualified’ or Registered status, but it will be highly rewarding, as you’ll be entering a whole new world where you will learn a way to communicate in a rich language that will help you become truly awesome!
Remember, here at Deaf Umbrella, we support the interpreters of tomorrow.
