SEND events next week

Since my election the issues faced by children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the education system have never been far from the top of my mind or caseload. Last week in Parliament I paid tribute to parent carers who often face huge battles to secure what every child deserves without question: a suitable education. I’ve visited local schools and spoken to professionals and parents. It is clear the current system isn’t working.

Since the election last year a lot of work has been done to identify what the problems are in the SEND system. This autumn the government will publish a white paper, which is a document signalling the likely future direction of legislation in this area. Ahead of that, I want to collect our ideas on what needs to change, based on experiences of parent carers and young people with SEND in Calder Valley.

I am holding two events next week to collect your feedback, in Mytholmroyd and Elland. If you are a resident of Calder Valley with experience in this area please come along. Booking is essential via Eventbrite. We are expecting these events to be busy but will do our best to add extra capacity, so please join the waitlist if needed.

The first hour of both the events will be a drop-in session for parents from Calder Valley who currently need individual support from my team with their SEND child's education. If you don’t have a current issue please come along later for the discussion. Hope to see you there.

The Minnie ears may now be off, but the celebrations have not stopped. Spring Tuition results this year have been incredible. The most grade 9s we have ever seen, plus so many students exceeding their expectations as well as some hard fought for and well deserved grade 4s and 5s.

I am unbelievably proud of all of our students and our brilliant team. Thank you for all our parents and students for getting in touch and for all of our lovely messages. You did it! 🥳

Huge congratulations to our incredible students on their GCSE results today. Our students achieved above and beyond their expectations and we are proud of each and everyone one of you.

There have been some amazing individual stories of students, who haven't had the easiest time of it in education, achieving fabulous results. Alongside these, we've seen hard won 4s, the tip top nines and everything in between. We're proud of every single one of you.

A huge well done to Team Spring too. Team work makes the dream work ❤️

A part of our provision that is not as obvious to the untrained eye, is supporting students with mental health and anxiety related issues. Throughout school hours, our space becomes a haven for the students who need us the most and it's the part of what we do that I am most proud.

As a team we are pretty good at providing nurturing provision alongside our academic support- as you will see from just a snippet of the feedback we receive from students, parents and carers.

Why do we love doing this? When it comes to anxiety related issues - I've been there and bought the T-shirt. It is a privilege to create the support that I needed when I was younger. I feel grateful every day to be able to be there for our students, their families and to be living in my purpose.

In the main, we try and keep the space a social media free zone (not always easy when you're battling the pressures of promoting your business!) However, in the spirit of Children's Mental Health week, I wanted to share the above, celebrate the wins of my incredible, often unseen, students and say: if you or your child is struggling with mental health issues, you are not alone and more than likely you are doing brilliantly. Overcoming mental health difficulties is not a quick or easy task; it's something that needs time, space, support and an enormous amount of courage.

If in doubt, reach out - you are not alone.
