On Wednesday 7th October our Politics students took part in a live Learn with the Lords event where Lord Duncan of Springbank, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, engaged our students in an hour long session whereby he explained the role of the House of Lords, his own personal experiences of being a Lord and answered the students’ questions on a range of political and topical issues.
In a wide-ranging session, our students asked Lord Duncan about his opinions on the independence of the House of Lords, whether he believed the chamber needed further reform and his opinions on a range of topical issues including Devolution, the Environment, the UK’s relationship with the EU, LGBTQ rights and tax policy.
Lord Duncan was forthright and illuminating on his political opinions throughout and keen to engage our students in discussion and debate.
At the end of the session one student commented that ‘we gained more insight into the Lords and Lord Duncan’s opinions.
Another that ‘Lord Duncan gave us a brilliant insight into the function and appointments process of the Lords, it really helped with recalling and deepening everything we had learnt about the House of Lords in lessons.’
Mr Carter commented at the end of the session that it ‘Was a really good event that enabled our students to see politics in action and have a real-world framework for their questions. Lord Duncan was really clear in his answers and I was pleased with the excellent engagement and enthusiasm shown by our students. It really helped deepen their knowledge and understanding of the House of Lords.’
