Yesterday we lost one of our beehives. We opened it up to find hundreds of dead bees at the bottom. Whilst loosing a hive during the winter isn’t uncommon it is still a sad state of affairs. There are a number of reasons it didn’t survive, could have been to fewer bees to keep the hive warm enough for the cold snaps. They didn’t die of starvation as there were lots of honey left in the hive. But the most likely scenario is they died from pesticide poisoning. Many of the bees were found with their proboscis sticking out usually a sign of this. Again, this isn’t unheard of but it has rattle me to think so many beekeepers are faced with this regularly due to the widespread use of pesticides still. I’m not sure what we can do about this but it definitely saddens me.

There are so many times especially in adverse weather when we don’t go out with any plan at all. Nothing. And there are many times I think from an onlookers perspective that I look like I am doing nothing. But I know deep down why I am there… because before I get to the end of my thought ‘I look like I should be doing something’ a child will come to me the share something amazing they have built and I get to give them my full attention and share their joy or I notice someone not interacting as they usually would and I have the time to find out that their feet are so cold so we turn it around and go for a jog or play boot tag, or I get pulled into a squabble that needs facilitating because the cold is making people’s patients a little fragile. I’m never doing nothing, in those moments I am reminded that this is exactly what I need to be doing.

Come join me on a site tour. Ignore my little rambles, it had been a long day 🙈
This site was originally just a field from fence line to fence line with the odd mature tree. It’s taken 9 years to develop and it’s has changed so much! I love this time of year when everything turns green and blossoms and you see how much things have grown. We can no longer see the top gathering circle (willow) and the hedgerow planted over 4 years has now grown. As you can see lots of loose parts, lots of opportunities for self-direct play and lots of space and freedom.
