Is your baby under one year old? Could you help with this survey?

The Durham Infancy and Sleep Centre (with the Lullaby Trust) are doing some research/fact finding. Can you help them? It is important that they know where parents and caregivers who use slings are getting their support from - it is a fact that many organisations/formal bodies do not offer safe babywearing info and many people many never know about the fabulous community resources that exist.

_________
Sling and baby carrier sleep safety: exploring & developing information that parents need.

Parents and carers of the UK are invited to help us understand how and why they may or may not use adult-worn baby slings or carriers.
The Durham Infancy and Sleep Centre (DISC) are currently undertaking research to understand why parents/carers may use adult-worn baby slings or carriers, how they do so, and how they find information. We are interested in hearing from people who do not use a sling/carrier as well as those who do. The project is funded by a research grant from The Lullaby Trust.

The DISC team have created a survey to gather information from parents and carers on sling and carrier use and decision-making, knowledge of sling/carrier safety, and awareness of guidance and sources of information. All parents and carers of children under 1 year of age are invited to participate.

The survey can be accessed through the link below:
https://durhamuniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8GsWSswXQrIAHRQ

The survey will close on the 20th May 2025. All information obtained from the survey will be kept anonymous. The results will be published in a report for stakeholders, which will include a list of recommendations on how to improve guidance on safe baby sling or carrier use. We will also be publishing the results of the project in an academic journal.
If you have any questions or concerns about this study, please contact the project team at [email protected]

We are often asked about whether a carrier should have ‘a head support’. This infographic from Carrying Matters helps to answer.

Carrier height matters. Babies have large heavy heads with a prominent occipital bone at the back which can be easily pushed forwards by fabric/panels, forcing the chin onto the chest and obstructing airway. This can happen in loose carriers also as baby curls forward and sinks down.

The ideal height is at the nape of the neck so the head is free to move and airway is open. The body of the carrier must be snug to support the chest.

Carrier height can be too low: small/young/sleeping babies need support to their upper back. Older awake babies who have trunk control may enjoy arms out (typically the age they can be perched on the hip and held with one arm).

Please see your local sling library for support if your carrier is too tall or loose. If your baby has a floppy head, let us help you, *don’t be tempted to put the panel height up*. Usually the carrier needs tightening around the chest or the carrier may too big for your baby. See the link below for more information and help/suggestions.

Hi all, just a quick note to say I'm (obviously) a bit rubbish at this whole social media thing, but I'm slowly getting organised to update this page, the Sweet Wrappers Instagram page, and the website, to reflect current offerings. Watch this space.... sort of....

It’s warming up nicely ☀️

Top tips for babywearing safely in this kind of weather (cos babies often still want to be held or you need to go somewhere)…
💦keep well hydrated
🕶find or make shade (brollies are good portable shades!)⛱
🧴protect exposed areas with sun block (zinc based)
☀️use single layer breathable carriers (like the MiniSling, cotton ring sling, mesh Beco Cool/Izmi or the ultra light solar Integra or Tula Lite)
👍hip or back carries are cooler
🌞go out early or late, avoid the middle of the day
😎use a buggy for transport, (but don’t put cloths over for shade, it just raises the temp, use things like the snooze shade)

Hi everyone, just to say that yes, Sweet Wrappers is still temporarily closed while I try to work out a new way to run, and that this may be some way off yet. In the meantime, there is a wealth of information about infant carrying on www.CarryingMatters.co.uk , including a directory of in-person support from other Carrying Consultants, and sling libraries. Much love to all, Marianne ❤️

The simple act of connecting with a small person has powerful and long-lasting effects. Rosie Knowles explores why carrying matters, and how to do it well! Find out more about babywearing safety, sling education and a guide to slings
