“What’s the point in talking about it? Talking doesn’t change anything.”
I hear versions of this often.
And perhaps talking is pointless if all we are doing is repeating the story without being helped to understand it, process it, find acceptance, or discover what we need next.
But being seen and heard is something very different.
When we feel truly heard — not judged, corrected, minimised, hurried towards a solution, or told how we should feel — something can begin to settle inside us.
Being heard can be validation: Yes, this happened. Your feelings make sense.
It can feel like vindication: I wasn’t imagining it. It mattered.
Sometimes it is the closest thing we will ever receive to justice.
It is being met with empathy and understanding.
It can relieve the enormous stress of carrying something alone.
And in that safe space, we can begin to make sense of what happened. We can process it. Put things into some kind of order. Understand ourselves and our responses differently.
When an experience has left us feeling rejected, betrayed, silenced, excluded or wronged, being genuinely seen and heard can even help us find our way back to belonging.
And sometimes, eventually, it helps us let go.
Not because what happened suddenly becomes okay.
Not because someone tells us to “move on.”
But because we have finally been able to give the experience somewhere to go.
For me, this is why safety comes before healing.
At A Positive Start, we use our TRUST framework when thinking about what helps create a genuinely safe space:
T — Trigger Recognition
Recognising what is happening within us and what may have activated it.
R — Reassurance
Experiencing another person as present, steady and non-judgemental.
U — Understanding
Being met with curiosity and empathy rather than assumption.
S — Safety
Creating the conditions in which we no longer have to protect ourselves quite so fiercely.
T — Truth
Having space for the truth of our own experience — without it being minimised, rewritten or denied.
Because:
Without Truth, there can be no Trust.
Without Trust, there can be no Safety.
And without Safety, there can be no Healing.
Sometimes talking doesn’t change what happened.
But being truly seen, heard and understood can change what we have to carry from it.
And sometimes, that is what finally sets us free.
