It links with what our colleague Ruth Everett wrote last year (no less relevant today) about how the literacy of our pupils is everyone's responsibility and is one of the major barriers to success for pupils, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. She discusses the symptoms of low literacy levels (under-achievement, frustration, withdrawn, negative behaviour, low self-worth etc.) and offers some evidence-informed strategies for teachers of every subject - not just the English department.
