Owls / larks refer to biological chronotypes.

The Lark Chronotype are individuals who wake up bright and early, bouncing out of bed with a spring in their step, bundled full of energy right from the start of the day. However, come the evening, feel fatigued and ready for an early night.

In contrast, Owl chronotypes tend to wake late,
and go to bed late. They reach their peak performance and alertness level later in the day than larks.

Can you relate?

We have all heard the phrase

'It takes a village to raise a child..'

However it feels like in this day and age, many parents never truly discover 'their village' and may not have the luxury of a good support network to help as their little one grows up. It seems an outdated term and almost like a privilege to have a village.

I was pondering this thought a lot and it seems to be that rather than waiting for our village to arrive, we almost have to go and recruit our own village to help us along our journey. Of course some join us along the way into parenthood... grandparents, close friends, but as you go through life as a parent, it is about finding other like minded mums in places like baby groups, mums from NCT classes, online apps like Peanut, to expand your village and share the load.

Sleep Environment!

It is so important to affirm to your little one that their bedroom is a positive, calm safe space. If it is used in a negative way, this can make bed times more difficult as they may not associate it as a place of security and happiness..they may not want to be in there if this is the case.

Try and keep positive vibes only in your little ones sleep environment to help them develop happy connotations for better bedtimes.

It is never too soon to initiate a bedtime routine for your little one and evidence shows that it betters sleep outcomes if you do!

A bedtime routine doesn't have to be a long drawn out process, just a few regular tasks done each night right before bed time. It helps your little one learn to anticipate bedtime and wind down.

Just because something is normal - it doesn't make it easy! Sleep deprivation makes everything seem much worse, more emotionally charged and hard to cope with. It is reassuring to know that you are not alone and others are feeling the same way. Reach out to your friends, family, local parent groups, professionals and talk about it. Sometimes just unloading how you feel onto someone can make things feel better. We need to break the stigma of talking about hard parenting is, it doesn't make you a bad parent by admitting some points are hard, and most definitely celebrate every little win and milestone!

Remember that every child is different and will sleep through the night when they are ready.

Such a high proportion of babies at 6 months (always seemed like a milestone for sleeping through) are waking regularly still - this is normal!

It's a relentless fight...the fight between parents and bringing down your little one's room temperature during these hot summer days and nights.

The reason we get so stressed out about keeping the rooms as cool as possible is because we know that overheating is a risk factor for SIDS. High room temperatures and too many layers are proven as potential risk factors also.

However, it is important to remember that you can only do the best you can to keep the room as cool as possible.
- Keep blinds / curtains closed during the day
- Dress your little one in loose light layers, ideally cotton
- Use a fan in the bedroom, not aimed directly at the bed or cot, to maintain air circulation
- If your little one is over 6 months old, keep a fresh bottle of water in their room so if they wake up during the night, there is quick access to a sip of water to remain hydrated
- Expect and allow for more frequent feeds in the higher temperatures
- Switch up duvets for lighter blankets or thin tog sleepsuit

Absolutely nothing will happen if you don't sleep train your child. They will eventually sleep through the night when they are ready.

A child will develop skills as they grow up to learn to sleep for extended periods of time as their circadian rhythm matures. However, in some cases, parents find sleep coaching useful to give them strategies to manage their little one's sleep and to improve areas that will holistically better and encourage better sleep habits.

But at the end of the day, you never HAVE to sleep train or sleep coach your child. It is based on your own personal circumstances and wishes.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, but never doubt your instinct and expertise in your child. Don't follow someone's advice just because they have given it, especially if it goes against your gut instinct.
Sleep advice is everywhere and what may work for one child may not necessarily work for another little one. Every child is unique, every child's sleep is unique. Do what sits well with you and feels right.

Message inspired by the great holistic sleep guru

Not meant at all in a dismissive way, but this parenting gig is not easy. Coping with baby's sleep patterns, particularly in the early days is HARD! But just because something is hard, doesn't mean something needs fixing or is necessarily wrong.

A lot of holistic sleep coaching involves identifying and reassuring parents about what is actually normal about their child's sleep and troubleshooting any other issues. Sometimes just hearing someone say 'That's normal' is a huge relief!

This is your reminder, during the whirlwind that is parenthood, to slow down.

Enjoy the small moments, focus on the calm

Your little one is very perceptive and when trying to settle off to sleep, they can feel any tension or stress you may be feeling. It is far easier said than done, but even when sleep for your little one is going through a rough patch, try and remember that these moments are temporary, the hard will pass and things will get better.

Enjoy the cuddles, the contact naps, the loving gazes as they snuggle in your arms.
